The 60 year-old opposition leader in Malaysia had  been sent behind bars after an arrest warrant was issued yesterday. The warrant has been issued for a sodomy case against Anwar. Mr Anwar's arrest will be seen as provocative by Malaysian opposition groups. When he was arrested on similar charges 10 years ago, his supporters staged large demonstrations.

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has been arrested outside his home, his lawyer has said.

Mr Anwar was stopped by several police officers outside his home and taken to police headquarters.

His lawyer said no reason was given for the arrest, which came shortly before Mr Anwar was due to give a statement to police over sodomy allegations.

The former deputy prime minister denies the allegations, which he says are aimed at ending his political comeback.

He stressed in his speech that with proper governance of various resources in Malaysia, the petrol price can be reduced to a tolerance-able rate. He believed the recent petrol price hike has been made ridiculed by current government and suffers the rakyat and the country economic as a whole.

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar released on bail

Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA News) - Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was released Thursday morning, a day after he was arrested on sodomy allegations.

"He was arrested yesterday as he was a suspect, and his arrest was made in accordance with the law," Deputy Police Chief Ismail Omar was quoted by DPA as saying.

Ismail said Anwar was "treated fairly" during the time he was detained at the Kuala Lumpur police station for questioning on charges that he had sodomized a male former aide.

"Police followed every procedure (in his arrest)," Ismail was quoted as saying by the Star daily.

Anwar left the police station accompanied by his family and aides.

A spokesman from his opposition National Justice Party said the former deputy prime minister would be heading home, where he is due later in the day to give a press conference.  end (*)

Chinese, Malays (& Indians) - the 3 main ethcnics of Malaysia - shout together, supporting the points delivered by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Harmony of the major races is truly amazing. Indeed the issue has at least brought them much closer to a certain extent.
The grand finale of the price hike protest series is a gathering of supposedly 1 million Malaysians to show their disagreement on the price increment.
