Former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir Mohamad today announced that he is quitting the political party (UMNO) which he once headed.
He made the announcement before an audience of about 1000 people who had gathered to hear him speak in the northern state of Kedah in Peninsula Malaysia.
Mahathir, 82, is resigning with immediate effect from the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in protest over the continued leadership of the present Prime Minster, Abdullah Badawi as Prime Minster and President of UMNO.
He urged UMNO members to follow suit in quitting the party and to only return when Abdullah Badawi has stepped down.
Dr Mahathir was Malaysia's fourth Prime Minister from July, 1981 to October, 2003.
