India - 21:18 - A first year Maldivian student in Mysore is reportedly missing after being dragged by high current in a water stream whilst out with friends today. Ahmed Yamin, 21, joined Majanas College in Mysore this year to do a degree is Psychology and Criminology. He is a staff of Maldives Police Services, according to his colleagues. Eyewitness to the incident is saying that he was swimming in the river stream and suddenly he was dragged away by the current and hasn’t been seen since.
The incident occurred around 2:00 pm this afternoon and despite attempts by the students and the Maldives High Commission in India, local police did not start a search for many hours. Sources within the student community in Mysore said that local police began a search at around 8:00 pm, six hours after the incident. The student also said that it is a common outdoor place where they go to have some fresh air and a swim.
The student community is shocked at this incident and hope to find their colleague alive and well. However, with temperature dropping in that part of India at night, chances of finding him alive appears slim. Students are also very sad and disappointed in the slow reaction of the local police. His colleagues are still at the scene as the search operation is underway.
Latest reports are that the police have stopped the search and will begin the operation again in the morning. The students are now on their way to the police station to give their statements.
Mysore is one of the most beautiful cities in India with lots of mountains, waterfalls and rivers. Similar accidents are not uncommon during expeditions and outdoor activities.
