An army specialist in Virginia was shot and killed by police when he was approached for wearing a full Joker-style costume, complete with makeup and wielding a shotgun.

The man, Christopher Lanum, was wanted as a suspect over the stabbing of a fellow soldier at Fort Eustis. His girlfriend told investigators that the soldier idolised the Joker, most recently played by the late Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.

The dead man, who was said to be obsessed with the character, was wearing full costume and makeup when he was challenged by officers in a national park in Virginia, according to legal documents.

The FBI named him as army specialist Christopher Lanum, who was wanted as a suspect over the stabbing of a fellow soldier at Fort Eustis, a major army base in the state, several hours before. Lanum's girlfriend, Patsy Ann Marie Montowski, who was with him when he was shot, told investigators that the soldier idolised the Joker, played in the most recent Batman film, The Dark Knight, by the late Heath Ledger.

Sadly you people do not know this entire story. Look it up and learn more. I worked with this soldier who was one of my Combat Medics in the U.S. Army. He SURVIVED a 15 month tour in Iraq and saved a lot of lives. Those lives he saved can see their families again. I wish I was still stationed with him so I could have helped him.

What happened to him then, not to cause him to dress like this, but to kill a fellow soldier? PTSD or something like it?

As a friend can you speculate?

I also served in Iraq with Chris he was our platoon medic and he was an awesome medic, he saved lives of both American and Iraqi.  He was a good man and a good father.  I think there is more to the story then what is being told by the media.  He didnt not idolize the Joker he just like Jokers period.

And that's what would really have happened to the joker outside of a hollywood film or comic book!

I got the pleasure of getting to know and work with SPC. Lanum this past year. He was such a funny guy! Everybody at our clinic loved him! He could make anybody smile on their worst day. I even double dated with him and his girlfriend, Patsy. They were a cute couple who were madly in love with their children and just loved to laugh. Its really tragic seeing what happened, especially just talking to him 2 weeks ago and it seemed like he was happy and everything was gravy. I feel so bad for his daughter. The way they just lit up whenever they were together will always leave an impression in my mind. He was a great man, a great father. He will be missed.

I am a SSG in the United States Army whom had the opportunity to serve and mentor Chrisopher Lanum.  I served with him for 15 months in Iraq which 5 months of that was spent in the deadliest city on earth "Baqubah".  Doc Lanum saw several of his close friends shot and killed, blown up and killed and countless shot and wounded.  Even the soldiers that we lost while serving in Iraq,he still did all he could to try to save them.  For those who have never been in combat you will never know just exactly what type of injuries we as medics are seeing and having to treat.  You can use all your supplies and apply all your knowledge but some injuries you just can't do anything to prevent death.  Doc Lanum was one of my finest medics  Many men are alive today because of this man.  As a NCO I ask the question, "What as NCO's are we doing to make sure our soldiers who have deployed and moved on to other units doing to make sure that the soldiers we have coming into our units do not fall to the way side?"  What are we doing to ensure that not just medics but all soldiers that have deployed get the help they need after moving from one unit to another?
So, that one day something does not send them over the edge like Christopher.  Soldiers will have conflict, we can only speculate what happen between him and the other soldier.  I do know that christopher loved his daughter and re-enlisted in the army to be closer to her and be a part of her life.  There are some things that people will never understand about true PTSD.  So for those who read the news paper articles and want to laugh and make jokes, know that this man was SERVING his county, HAS been to COMBAT, and has defended the righs that you so choose to express.  This is a true, real life tragedy.  For the family members of Christopher Lanum, I am sorry for your loss and he will always have a place in my heart and in my life as a TRUE AMERCIAN HERO regardless what others may think, say or write on his behalf.  To Christopher Lanum, May your soul be at rest with your family and friends that have gone before you.  GOD BLESS!

Chris was such an awesome friend.  We have been good friends for over 9 years.  All he ever did was talk aboout his daughter.  She is sooo cute!  I went to his funeral and it was a nice one, but so sad.  We have to remember who Chris was and how he lived.  We dont want to think about how he died and what he did..just remember the good times we had with him.  It sucks that I look through my cell phone and I see his number and knowing I cant text him or call him no more.

It is a sad tragedy for an incident like this to happen to such a brave and honorable individual. I too served with Lanum. He was a superior medic and one hell of a soldier and friend to his brothers at the tweezy. Those of you with your negative and critical closed minded thinking should hold your tongues and learn of the hardships that combat soldiers, especially medics strive through, not just while deployed, but every day following. It is rare for any soldier to return home from combat "normal" heck, we're not normal for what we do in the first place. Less than 5 % of individuals in the United States serve in the military. What does that say for the small percentage that do? Courageous? Selfless? Your damn right!! I am humble and moddest for what I do and for what I have done. Most of us are. Sometimes people take that for grantid. People confuse what's on the surface for what may lie within. And then you jump on the first opportunity you have to hack on someone that has problems that surface. Shame on you. It is human nature for people to have night mares, trouble sleeping, anger, depression, etc. Those are common symptoms of PTSD, I have them too. But as long as I'm dealing with it in my own way that doesn't endanger anyone, people assume there is nothing wrong with me. Wrong again. The problem is that our medical support, both military and civilian, don't keep up with and don't examine soldiers enough or continuously to insure they are healing or under control of their emotions. Just because Doc Lanum snapped doesn't make him crazy, it simply came to a point where he couldn't figure out how to control his anger and depression and felt that he had now where to turn that would actually help, without judging him. This isn't the first time something like this has happened people. When are we going to start being proactive in helping soldiers? Instead of criticizing soldiers for what they do negatively, examine the facts and thank him for his service and sacrifice. Abe Lincoln was asked once why he wasn't out spoken, he replied; "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than speak and remove all doubt." So I ask; rather than assume that Doc was crazy, review the facts and determine what was missed and what could be fixed to help prevent this from happening to another brave soldier. We'll miss you Doc. "Regulars!!!!"

Whats up fellas, Doc Mac here, good words for all the simpltons who fire off at the mouth with uneducated garbage. Anyway I wish I could have been there to help him, we always had good talks.  This is another tragic loss, some will never forget, Lanum will be dearly missed by many.  My heart goes out to all his family and friends mostly his daughter.  Peace

He was a deranged evil psycho his whole life.  He hurt lots and lots of people and did tons of very bad things out of no reason other then his own sadism.

Don't you think it bad enough his daughter has to read about this one day, its very disrespectful to get on here and write hateful things about him, he is no longer with us, cant you find something better to do than talk smack just because you have some stupid immature grudge against someone, his daughter lost her father and his mother lost her son, and his brother lost his big brother so grow up and think about if this was you and people were writing things on here your children will read one day, chris was one of the greatest people ive ever known and he loved his family more than anything. he served his country and look what it did to him. its just very sad and just hateful to write such things when his family has to see them so can you keep them to yourself..so sad how rude and insincere and cruel people can be..so sad..
