Man Electrocuted by NYC Subway Third Rail: NSFW Video
Third Rail Electrocution Video from New York: Graphic, NSFL
A young man was killed on the New York City subway system tracks on the night of July 1, 2012. Apparently intoxicated, the man had fallen onto the tracks at the uptown F-Train platform at 34th Street-Herald Square.
Some bystanders filmed the incident on their phonecams, while others tried to help the man off the tracks before a train pulled in. However, the man ended up falling onto the track furthest from the platform, where the third rail is found.
The man made contact with the third rail and began to twitch, and then his body started smoldering. At that point, bystanders started freaking out, with some yelling for someone to help the man, and others warning that touching him would be dangerous.
The third-rail electrocution video was pulled from YouTube, but has emerged on LiveLeak. You can see the video below, but be advised that it is graphic.
The third rail is not fully exposed: it's covered on two aspects by a metal hood. It can be touched by reaching through the protective covering, but not easily.
The NYPD did not release the victim's name. Third-rail deaths are rare, but they happen. In 2010, an MTA worker was killed after accidentally touching the third rail.
