OPINION
Local residents were interviewed about this stabbing on Global noon news. The funny thing is that they weren't really in fear due to the stabbing. They are calling for the city to close the club because of the noise the patrons make when it closes late at night. I lived right behind this club several years ago. And yes, the crowd can be noisy but the club was there first. If people want peace and quiet why do they live near a large, popular nightclub? There has been a club there since before any of the residential towers were built so they can't say that the club is a new problem. These NIMBY's have no right to ask the city to close down a perfectly legal business just because it annoys them. Move to the 'burbs whiners!
Man stabbed to death outside bar Richards Street in downtown Vancouver cordoned off Sunday during investigation Allison Cross, Vancouver Sun Published: Sunday, August 24, 2008VANCOUVER — A 25-year-old man is dead after he was stabbed outside a downtown Vancouver nightclub over the weekend, according to police.
The victim got into a fight with another man outside the Atlantis Night Club on Richards Street just after 2 a.m., was stabbed and later died of his injuries, said Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Const. Jana McGuinness.

Photograph by : Ward Perrin/Vancouver SunPolice said they could not release any more details about the incident and would not say whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the stabbing.
Police had the club cordoned off on Sunday morning and Richards Street was closed between Davie and Pacific streets.
A witness told Global TV he saw a two men physically fighting each other outside the club.
Tammy MacDonald, who lives nearby, said she woke up in the middle of the night to a chorus of sirens from emergency vehicles.
“I’m not surprised,” said MacDonald, when she heard there had been a stabbing.
“It’s not so much the club that’s the problem but these guys outside [on the street] afterwards. It worries me. It’s right in your neighbourhood.”
Another resident who lives at the corner of Davie and Richards said the crowds coming out of the club are often very loud on the weekends.
“It worries me a little bit,” said Akiko Yabana, 27.
But Mark Trepp, who lives two blocks west of the Atlantis, said a stabbing in his neighbourhood isn’t something to be concerned about.
“It’s not a big deal,” he said, as he walked past the police barricades. “It happens in Vancouver.”
To increase the safety of their downtown establishments, many bars owners have signed up for a program called Bar Watch designed to discourage thugs and gangsters from coming to their clubs.
Participating clubs use metal detectors and ID scanners and allow police to remove known or suspected gangsters from their establishments.
Clubs also display a large red Bar Watch decal.
Atlantis does not participate in Bar Watch and never has, said program chair John Teti.
“If [the suspects] were in the club at some point before the fight, the metal detectors could have prevented what happened,” Teti said.
Another stabbing occurred over the weekend at the Surrey Central SkyTrain station.
A man was stabbed a number of times by another man while standing on the main platform just before 1 a.m. on Sunday morning, said Surrey RCMP’s Sgt. Evan Conway. No one was arrested in connection with the case.
The victim was taken to hospital and is in stable condition, Conway said.

I totally agree with the opinion at the beginning of this piece. You want to live in the country then go live in the country.

Thanks Mike. I ran into exactly the same thing when I lived in Gastown. People bought expensive condos in a building that was right nextdoor to a club (and I mean they shared a wall close). And those people whose condos were next to the club went to the strata and asked the council to petition the city to close them down. Luckily they were unsuccessful.

Thanks Jim. But we live in a relatively free society (Canada that is) so please feel free to express yourself fully. I am a big boy - I can take it.

Are those that move there made aware of the Club before they move?
Is the rent cheep and the location good for work and commute?
Can they find a compromise acceptable to all?
City's are constantly complaining that down town is dying out? Well, no wonder though.

You would have to be blind not to notice that you are buying a condo RIGHT NEXT to a huge nightclub. These areas are relatively expensive neighbourhoods (condos going for $500 - $1000 per square foot). It is just a case of people wanting to change the characted of their adopted neighbourhoods without any respect for the people and business that existed there when they moved in.

eastvanray, I like this story. It's good stuff. Par for the course, go live with the "Moo Cows" and "Cluck, Cluck "Chickens, most likely these are the same NDP residents who want criminals treated with kid gloves until it hits them in their backyard.

Mostly just uptight people who move into trendy neighbourhoods having never lived in an urban core environment.
