Many dead after consuming tainted alcohol in Nepal

At least 9 people have died in few days after consuming illegal hooch. All the deceased have drunk alcohol served from a drum at a village market on Sunday.

Dozens of people have been admitted in local hospital with headaches, vomiting, prolonged unconsciousness complaints after drinking contaminated alcohol.

Three residents of Britta-2 died on Monday night, while 13 others have fallen severely ill after consuming home-brewed alcohol at Kamhariya in Rautahat district.

The deceased have been identified as alcohol entrepreneur Ram Bilas Raut, Indra Raut and Rajendra Hajara, the police informed.

Severely ill Ram Nath Thakur, Bhola Raut, Shiva Dayal Ram, Asral Baithak, Tej Narayan and Kolu Mandal are undergoing treatment in Birgunj.

The police have taken control of Sikander Sah, responsible for selling tainted alcohol.

The alcohol which was put for sales has been sent to district headquarters for tests, the police said.

Only last week, one Birbal Tamang was killed and four others fell ill after consuming Virgin Whisky and Khukuri Rum in the capital.

Following the incident and complaints from consumers, the government banned sales of liquor with brand names - Virgin Whisky and Khukuri Rum- last week.
