On March 20, 2003, the United States of America led invasion of Iraq was launched, beginning with the Bush Doctrine of 'pre-emptive strike', with this action having been explained to the American people as being a necessary action after it was alleged that evidence existed that linked Iraq to Al Qaeda, identified as those responsible for the terrorist attack on the United States on September 11, 2001.
A link to an online informational resource about Iraq and the aftermath of the invasion called Iraq in Transition.

According to antiwar.com's casualty page, 4260 servvice members have died since the beginning of the war - only 3425 in combat. The last one was on March 19th.
The number of Iraqis killed in the war is impossible to determine. 91,131 and 99,510 civilians have been killed (per Iraqi Body Count's web site).
