Margery Tannenbaum Targets 9-year Old Girl With Craigslist Sex Ad
On the same day that the conviction of Lori Drew, the woman who harassed 13-year old Megan Meier into suicide via MySpace, was overturned, a second disturbing case of an adult woman targeting a child using the internet was introduced in Long Island, New York. This time the victim was only 9-years old and Margery Tannenbaum, the woman in question, targeted her with sex ads on Craigslist.
Just as in the Lori Drew case Margery Tannenbaum was motivated to harass a child because that child had a previous altercation with her daughter. Margery Tannenbaum decided to seek a horrific revenge against the 9-year old after she and her daughter had an argument. The two girls attend the same Hauppauge, New York school.
Margery Tannenbaum is accused of aggravated harassment and endangering the welfare of a minor after she posted sex ads on Craiglist that revealed the 9-year old girl's name and home phone number. The suggestive ads did not state the girl's age and people who responded to the Craiglist sex ad did not know they were trying to contact a child. The entire family of the 9-year old was subjected to the harassment which got as bad as 22 calls in one day.
Margery Tannenbaum plead not guilty on all counts and is said to be full of regret over her behavior. Tannenbaum, a New York social worker, has stated that she wants to mitigate further damage to her daughter and her 9-year old victim. However, both Tannenbaum and her lawyers seem to be downplaying her behavior, which makes her so-called remorse highly questionable.
Lawyer Tad Scharfenberg, spoke of the case and Margery Tannenbaum with a flippant disregard for both the real and potential harm her immature and vicious actions might have caused. "I think this has been blown out of proportion to what the actual alleged act was," Tad Scharfenberg told reporters shortly after his 'remorseful' client plead not guilty.
Officials told CNN affiliate News 12 in Long Island that the Craigslist ad read "I need a little affection... I'm blond, I'm cute and I'll be waiting."
Interested parties were directed to an e-mail address where they were given the girl's name and home phone number. Callers were unaware they were trying to reach a 9-year-old.
According to Suffolk County authorities, the mother of the girl intercepted calls before her daughter answered. She said she received 22 calls in one day, in all around 40 calls from various men who saw the ad, including some seeking an escort service. After Craigslist was issued a subpoena, authorities said they were able to track the account to Tannenbaum.
In court documents read aloud by Suffolk District Attorney Tom Spota, the 9-year-old's mother described one of the phone calls she received from a man responding to the ad.
She said, "This is her mother. Can I help you?" The male replied, "Oh. Hot lady lives with foxy mamma?"
The caller hung up after the girl's mother told him the "hot girl" he was referring to was 9 years old.

Of course she is "full of regret" for getting caught. Doesn't everyone remember Mothers of
friends who were capable of this?! Vicious they could be if their daughter's came home crying
over spilled milk which she did not tell her mom the whole truth about. ..in some cases but still
Moms should be mature and moral ....only in a perfect world!

She should also be convicted of attempting to sexually traffic a minor. She posted an sex ad for a minor and then directed men to her home phone number. Thank God the mom got to the phone

TO the attention of Tina Kells: This case is so different than the Drew/Meier events and you should not be dragging that case into this one. I might even go so far as to say, even including the suicide of Megan, this event with a 9 year old, if what I've read is true, was so much more offensive. If true, knowing the age of the little girl this lady should be charged with attempted trafficing of a minor at the least. Again if the events as stated are true legal minds in the prosecutor's office should be able to find a multitude of charges. And that is so unlike the Drew case. There were no laws broken by Drew. And she did not get off on a technicality. The charges were the only miscarriage of justice in that case.
