MARIE OSMOND: Book Signing Event At Vegas WalMart
Las Vegas, NV...April 18, 2009
"A little bit country?" "A little bit rock and roll?"
Nope. Neither of those trademark lines heard by millions of Donnie and Marie fans from their TV variety show describes Ms. Osmond's recent appearance at a "meet and greet" book signing in Vegas. Marie's overall look was a cross between a 60s teen Disney star ala Frankie Avalon girlfriend and a glamour model at a Hollywood shoot. You better add just a pinch of Hannah Montana cuteness to get the whole image. The good news is probably no one could pull this off better than the one and only Marie Osmond.
ABC's "Dancing With The Stars" reconnected America's love reunion with the Teen Queen who came into homes each week many years ago on the tube alongside her Teen Idol brother. When she collapsed in the arms of her dancing partner while facing the judges, she secured a place in the hearts of fans that will endure until she decides to retire those "Paper Roses" she sang about in her hit records.
Fast forward to 2009: Ms. Osmond and brother are bigger than life stars again with their faces on the Las Vegas Strip covering the entire side of the Flamingo Hotel directly across from Caesars Palace. If you were walking down the Strip sidewalk late at night after a bit of too much partying, you might look up and think you were in a scene from " The Amazing Colossal Osmonds" movie.
The WalMart store where Marie's book signing event had been scheduled is one that I frequent regularly. So I was certainly aware of all the changes and modifications that were being made two days in advance of the author's arrival. The entire children's section had been blocked off with yellow tape. A backdrop with Marie's name was placed strategically behind a desk with a stand up pulpit in front where she could sign each book and quickly pose with fans for a picture. The key to success at any book signing which involves a popular celebrity is to have a "hit and run" setup. The idea is to sell books and meet fans. Marie's handlers were experts at this and she was also not a novice at carrying out her part of the plan.

Her latest book, "Might As Well Laugh About It Now", was co-written by Marcia Wilke. Ms. Osmond has made the initial media book tour circuit sharing special gems of the ups and downs in her life that are covered truthfully with humor in her literary offering. No doubt each of us could write our own life story using the same book title. That is definitely a hook and common denominator that helps fans and readers relate closely with the experiences this Americana Teen image celeb has encountered since birth. The entire Osmond family has always had a special gift in marketing their talents to the masses.
She hugged necks, shook hands, leaned into shoulders and displayed that signature smile over and over with fans as if they were individually the only person who had ever purchased one of her books. I overheard several fans later in the store telling how they would cherish forever this moment of having Marie sign their book and pose with them for a picture. Personal touch is what it is all about. What a marvelous way Ms. Osmond plays the role in the hearts of fans as "the perfect daughter", "the innocent girl next door" and the "I knew she would be in person just like she was on TV". From all observations, I believe Marie feels very much at home being with her vast Family of Fans. This is not always the impression many authors leave with those who attend a book signing event. That may be why they probably do not sell as many books.
If you ever wondered what Miley Cyrus might be like in three decades, cast your eyes upon Marie Osmond. Life has ups and downs for all of us. But when situations are approached with optimism and humor, somehow it all seems to turn out better than we first imagined it could. Even with all the obstacles she writes about in her book, things certainly have turned out well for Marie Osmond. If you see Billy Ray Cyrus at one of his concerts, you might suggest he buy this book for Miley? But if she wants it personally signed, she just might have to wait her turn in line if Marie is at another WalMart!

Out of all the Osmonds, Marie was the one that I fancied the most.
