The forest fire that has burned over 75,000 hectares in Santa Barbara, California this week started in a pot farm which was located on an area under control by a Mexican drug organisation, California authorities say.

The fire, known as La brea, started in a cooking area on the marijuana farm. The people who were working at the farm escaped into the forest on foot.

The location of those who ran the pot farm isn't known, but forest officials warn "not to approach anyone who looks suspicious but to instead contact the nearest law enforcement agency."

La Brea has been burning since August 8, and is still not under control. So far, 234 residents have been evacuated. California Governmor Arnord Schwarzenegger said that there are currently 11 fires burning across the state.
