Marines Disciplined for Puppy Cliff Video

Two US Marines were disciplined over the scandal surrounding a viral video depicting a puppy getting thrown from a cliff.

Officials did not specify the role that each man played in the incident, which received international attention after a video of it appeared on YouTube.com March 3.

Lance Cpl. David Motari is being processed for removal for his role, the Marine Corps said, and Sgt. Crismarvin Banez Encarnacion also has been punished.

The video shows someone throwing a black-and-white puppy off a rocky cliff. The dog makes a yelping sound as it flies through the air.

"That's mean. That was mean," someone off-camera is heard saying.

YouTube removed the video about a day after it was posted, "due to terms of use violation," the site said.

The Marines were quick to condemn the video when it surfaced, calling it "shocking and deplorable."

I've yet to find anything conclusive on the authenticity of the video content: i.e. whether or not the puppy is alive when it's thrown from the cliff. The sound of the the puppy yelping does not match its increasing distance from the camera. However, the Marines have acted not on the validity of the video itself, but on its impact upon public perception of the Corps.

good stuff:

jordan, I like this story. It's good stuff.

not sure if "like" is the correct word to use here, but I am grateful to read the news that the Marines are being dealt with, and harshly. As you mentioned, even if there was no puppy, it is the impact upon public perception, it is what we believe, and honestly, I wouldn't put it past them.  I know the sound of a yelp, as a new puppy "mother", and if a yelp was heard, there is a good chance a puppy was being injured.  Puppies only yelp when they are being hurt, stepped on, or somehow being mistreated, accidentally, or otherwise.  more information would be helpful.  good reporting thus far.

This was indeed "shocking and deplorable" if it did infact occur.  I am going with the Marines and saying it did.
