Mark David Chapman, Man Who Murdered John Lennon, Up For Parole
Mark David Chapman is Up For Parole For the Sixth Time
Mark David Chapman was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for the shooting death of John Lennon on December 8 1980.
He was first denied parole in 2000, then 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and now will be up for parole again during the week of August 9; this year will be the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death.
CNN reports that there have been four letters submitted in opposition to Chapman's release, and two in support. He was denied release in 2008 due to concern for his own safety and welfare.
Chapman has spent 29 years in the maximum-security Attica Correctional Facility, and he reportedly has his own cell but spends most of his time in the library or working on housekeeping. He has been allowed conjugal visits with his wife Gloria for the last 20 years.
Chapman has not had an infraction since 1994, said Erik Kriss, spokesman for the Department of Corrections.
"He goes about his business, doing his prison job and without any fanfare," Kriss said.
John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono has been vocal in the past against Chapman getting out of jail, but she has not released any statement about his upcoming parole this year.
