Who Is Mark Lloyd?

Mark Lloyd a civil rights leader and FCC Diversity 'Czar' enrages conservatives with media reform. Right wing radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh is up in arms with Mark Lloyd's speech at a civil rights leadership conference.

Mark Lloyd: "the number one problem is media. I think the number one problem in our country is we can not have an intelligent dialogue."

He sites the global warming debate as an example of big media at its worst. Although at the time global warming had reached mass consensus with scientists as a man made event media coverage had not. There was still much debate between outlets, which hampered legislation and action on the issue.

In a conservative blogger's own words Mark Lloyd as FCC Diversity Czar will limit ownership of commercial radio stations.

Allowing for heterogeneity in media seems like a pretty practical idea. Varied Ownership of the press will increase view points and decrease influence from Big industry with malicious agendas (cough health care reform cough cough).

Lloyd wants to restore local and national caps on the ownership of commercial radio stations and ensure greater local accountability over radio licensing. The kicker is he would also require owners who refuse to give up profitable air time in the name of “localism” to pay a fee to support public broadcasting.

He proposes using the existing FCC “localism” requirement, which can mean anything from running more public service announcements to putting Janeane Garofalo on after Rush Limbaugh. Local community organizers would be encouraged to harass conservative stations by filing complaints with the FCC.

Mark Lloyd is the Vice President of strategic initiatives at the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights and a professor of public policy at Georgetown University. He conducted extensive research on the relation between communications and democratic citizenry at the Center for American Progress, as well as policy analysis. He was MLK's Visiting Scholar at MIT from 2002 to 2004 and an award winning journalist. The list keeps going on.

Put into context Mark Lloyd is a qualified candidate for FCC Diversity Czar. His decisions are being criticized by the opportunistic media that extorted the free market communications industry. Over this past year we have seen a market devoid of regulation has consequences - trillions of consequences. Regulation is a needed in all markets and Mark Lloyd seems more than competent to make it.

Conservative backlash should be taken for what it usually is and what Mark Llyod is trying to stop: a group of people spouting lies in order to further their own special interests.

"Mark Lloyd is trying to stop a group of people spouting lies in order to further their own special interests" -- unless they are far left Marxists (like Chavez and some folks in the current administration), and then it's ok...  Give me a break.  He is a Marxist who wants the government to control everything and is working toward that end.  If he is so hell bent on living in a tyrannical socialist state, why doesn't he just move to Venezuela with his buddy Hugo.

AMEN! If all of them want to change the United States of America to a " tyrannical socialist state " why dont they all move to Venezuela or Cuba??

To Found.Fath--

Plenty aspects of America are already socialist: propert tax, well fair, medicaid, medicare, social security, public eduacation et all. Please do not talk about things of which you lack the neccesary knowledge.

To Grace H., I count FIVE spelling errors in your statement. I would not be pointing any fingers at others regarding their lack of knowledge. It is impossible to take someone like you seriously.

Medicare and Social Security are NOT socialist.  We paid into it for over 50 years of working, which money went to support our parents and grandparents and yours.  Now that it is YOUR turn to support us, you want it deemed socialist.  Ours is paid for; Obama's Utopian healthcare is not and can never be without letting the old and the very young go without.

Grace, Not all taxes are socialist, property tax certainly is not. Welfare is socialist, and arguably has dimished individuals' personal concern for their fellow man and leave it to the unfeeling and uncaring State. Medicaid and medicare have succeeded in increasing health care costs substantially, offloading personal responsibility to the government, and are infact, rapidly going broke.  We are spending and incredible amount on public education, and our children are less educated and in many cases, not equiped to perform minimally in the workplace. You are right.  Plenty aspects of America are socialists.  This has not proven to be a good thing.  Taking the right to speak freely, rightly or wrongly, on issues will allow the people making policy to hide any shortfalls from the public, and prevent those who do not believe the policies are working from presenting evidence to that effect.  Inhibiting descent is not about reasonablness, it is about power, and I will be uncomfortable if any political party or administration is presented with such power.

Your comment is falacious. He is not Marxist as if he were he would not support the existence of government infrastructure. Marx hated control because the aristocracy dominated the will of the bourgeoise and the peasants.

"(Cough health care reform cough, cough)" LOL!

Peder.sande: Thanks for this story! It demonstrates that right-wing talk radio hosts are telling the truth when they say that Marxist Revolutionaries want to take over the American media and shut down free speech! It's a great public service announcement!

That WAS tongue in cheek...yeah?

Why do so many people think big gov is Marxist? Marxism is an economic system. Due to the theoretical equity (I say this as the system has never been applied) there is no need for the government.

1
BILOXIPAT

Right on.  And, as the Constitution provides, government only has one major role in our lives: To defend this nation against all foes, foreign and domestic.  How on earth does Obama and Lloyd spin this into providing health care for all and control over what we see and hear??

True diversity is found through the free expression of ideas. Mark Lloyd's  ideas are being criticized by the " conservative media" ... I like how it's posed at "opportunistic"... what is free speech but an opportunity to have ones views heard and known.  Over the last 250+ years we have seen a media market devoid of regulation because of that pesky first amendment... "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibitin the free exercise thereof; or abridging the FREEDOM OF SPEECH OR OF THE PRESS;.....  " This has worked fine for the liberal media for decades until conservatives were able to give a dissenting opinionthrough an alternative media outlet (talk radio) where working individuals could tune in during their work day (instead of having to sit their butts on a couch to have their news spoon fed to them)  It is the dissenting voice that the left is trying to shut up.If you think state controlled media is a good thing... Move to cuba or Venezuela.    Hasta luego!

Grace Hat 19:48 on September 1st, 2009 Why do so many people think big gov is Marxist? Marxism is an economic system. Per Merriam Webster:

  • Main Entry: Marx·ism
  • Pronunciation: \ˈmärk-ˌsi-zəm\
  • Function: noun
  • Date: 1887
: the political, economic, and social principles and policies advocated by Marx; especially : a theory and practice of socialism including the labor theory of value, dialectical materialism, the class struggle, and dictatorship of the proletariat until the establishment of a classless society To understand "Marxism" you have to understand what Karl Marx was advocating for through socialism: (socialism is the economic catalyst between capitalism and communism) Again Merriam Webster:
  • Main Entry: so·cial·ism
  • Pronunciation: \ˈsō-shə-ˌli-zəm\
  • Function: noun
  • Date: 1837
1 : any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods ( ie control of the banking, housing, automotive industry and the push for the health care industry... these have all been seized over the last year. 2 a : a system of society or group living in which there is no private property ( Through Fannie Mae and Freddie mac the government owns/controls over 50% of the private property in this country ) b : a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state (Again collective takeovers of large economic producers in a country ...specifically in ours... the banking, mortage/housing and automotive  industry  make up a large part of our economy... the health care industry makes up another 1/6th of our economy and again the Obama adminstration is seizing control of these "means of production" to be owned and controlled by the "state". 3 : a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done...This is the crux of the socialist/ marxist goal of "spreading the wealth" ... remember the Joe the plumber debacle anyone? Open your eyes... educate yourself on what these these words mean... how they apply to us right now and what all of the  feigned "crisis" actually are... a systematic vehicle  for this Obama administration and  governement to get all up into and take control over  your life through control of the economy and businesses.

You do know that your post in no way proved or disproved my point. Marxism is a utopian theory collective rule using economic equity. There is no government infrastructure. Just theoretical success and accord.

Grace, Have you read the book "Animal Farm".  You are correct.  There has never been a communist society.  The only way communism can come into existence is first for the workers to overthrough those who control capital and establish socialism throughout the world and this has never happeed. Marxism is akin to a religion.  Blind to reality and possessing an ethic that can justify deceipt, murder, and exploitation to further socialization of the world in pursuit of the nirvana that is communism. In addition, human nature being what it is, those who gain power are loath to relinquish it.  Just as any other religious fanatic, Marxists are perfectly willing to destroy lives pursuing their "heaven", but like other religions, "heaven" is a matter of faith, not fact. I will not hand over my freedom of speach or have any religion, including Marxism, determine what speach is good for me.

Grace H

"Marxism is akin to a religion." I think he's rolling in his grave right now.

Yes I have along with the Manifesto itself. Which have you read btw because your post indicates otherwise...

On the topic of the book. It was written as a social commentary on an oligarchy who took utopian ideals and created hell.

Grace, the problem with Marxism (forget the governmental aspect) is that there is no impetus to better oneself because there is no reward for risk. You make money, you HAVE TO share it with everyone else. This concept goes against the very grain of free will imparted to us by God.

1
BILOXIPAT

AMEN, brother!  To use a term that Marxists and Socialists hate.

Do heart surgeons do it for the money? People in proffesions such as doctors or lawyers do not do it for the money. That would not substain them. There has to be a passion underlying it all or they will burn out in a few years. And that early in those careers you aren't making much for all the ways you bend over backwards to impress your employer.

I’m not a genius, but I am a thinker

So let me sum up your position: There is too much homogeneity in media, as proven by the fact that not eveyone agrees on man made global warming. Bring on the diversity czar to enforce the party line. Witless fool...

WAKE UP AMERICA!

Marx Llyod is what we should call him. Only some kind of communist would praise what  Chavez did taking over and stomping on the concerns and rights of property owners and broadcasters. Obama has chosen a person for FCC czar who actually praises the governmental destruction of free speach and the destruction of the rights of the people. Obama and Mark Llyod are both ENEMIES of the United States Constitution. What happened to defending the constitution from threats both foreign and domestic? The appointment of Mark Lloyd with this knowledge of him, or at least the fact that these revelations (meaning Obama certainly now has this knowledge of him) have not caused his immediate job termination, is treason against the constitution. Obama said that he seeks out communists, and this is what he has done with Mark Lloyd and Van Jones and Rev Wright for 20 years, and many others! How many times does he do it before you people wake up! The Democratic party has been hijacked. These people are the enemy of the United States Constitution! Their clear agenda is to do to this country things like Chavez and other enemies do to their countries. Obama is our enemy, not our president.

Mark Lloyd has to go, first of all, if liberal radio could make it in the free market it would but it can't. I see nothing wrong with right-wing talk radio it is a perfect example of the free markets at work and of the first amendment of the Constitution. So, did Mark Lloyd take an oath of office? You know, the one where you swear to uphold and defend the Constitution and by his remarks he is also anti-capitalism which means he's communist or a fascist.

When one party controls you have a quasi-dictatorship. When a person with little or no experience is elected to a high office, you have an enigma. When that person has a silver tongue, what he advocates becomes a paradox. Gullible people vote not with their head. A man is the summation of his life experiences. Regardless of his political rhetoric he has been influenced by his parents, his ethnic background, and his religious base. Think before you vote! Utopia is a figment of the mind. Democracy will prevail.

"Although at the time global warming had reached mass consensus with scientists as a man made event media coverage had not. There was still much debate between outlets, which hampered legislation and action on the issue.   Allowing for heterogeneity in media seems like a pretty practical idea. Varied Ownership of the press will increase view points." Do I even need to point out how self contradictory this whole post is?  *L*  We need more viewpoints, by shutting up anyone the author doesn't agree with I guess.  Example: 1500 or so scientists' work made up the IPCC report that 'global warming' is built on.  However, while the individual pieces of evidence may have been factual, the conclusion drawn from forcing them together as if to make a puzzle out of pieces that didn't originally match was troubling to many of those scientists - who, the part you Don't hear much, didn't actually agree with the Frankenscience made out of their individual parts.  (Yes, for the record, I wear a lab coat and pocket protector for a living, but not as an actor, so I don't expect my view on science to be taken seriously by the left, it's not like I'm a genius PhD pop singer/model/junkie...) The same type of "science" and "solution" were held up during the global cooling scare attempts in the 70s, yet another thing I guess it's supposed to be verbotten for you to hear about since Gore won't admit it.  Or debate anyone, ever, under any conditions short of debating someone who agrees with his brilliant scientific discovery.  I do enjoy the variety in media, in fact, I enjoy listening to Share America radio programming as well - because I'm a federalist long before a lefty or righty.  But I guess, any whines/excuses/or complaints that make race quotas etc enforceable from the federal government down is a stupid pill some people are willing to swallow.  Think of it this way, as an individualist, I want equality.  Sadly, too many of my fellow countrymen on the left assume that for people to be treated equally, the federal government itself needs to treat everyone Differently based on race, gender, etc etc...  In other words, liberalism Requires racism be it treating people in or out of favor at the whim of popular/populist sentiment.  If you can't think of a time in American history where that may have proven humiliatingly moronic, please, beat yourself over the head with a history book until you understand that institutionalized racism is wrong; even if it's for "good/progressive/patronizing" reasons. Or at least, if you're going to be this stupid, do so at the state level as per the horrible dreaded 10th amendment of YOUR bill of rights.  Ignoring your own rights and protections in the constitution is almost as dangerous as the idiocy posted here.

Mark Lloyd must have never read the constitution. We are free to speak and there is nothing the Federal government can do. Free speech is a guaranteed rigth granted to all of us by the consitution. He can fight it all he wants, but the Federal Government has no right to suppress speech in this country or limit ownership of any media outlet regardless of the type of information it is publishing or broadcasting. This is a very dangerous attitude, every American Citizen should be concerned regardless of their political affiliations.
