She appeared on stage as a tall, lithe blonde, a quintessential young American, middle class, born right out of middle America. She did not write the words she sang, but she presented them with such glorious conviction, such strength, passion and nobility, that no one can deny she was a sweet, sweet trumpet calling the faithful to a better America.
