Masked Gunmen Shoot at 7 Teens Near Cody High School, Detroit, MI

At least 2, and possibly 3, masked gunmen in a green minivan shot at a group of young teens waiting at a bus stop near Cody High School in Detroit, Michigan injuring seven.  Students had just finished Cody 9th Grade Academy summer school classes and were on their way home when the shooting occurred.

Witness statements suggest it was a targeted hit on at least one of the seven teens at the bus stop.  When the green minivan pulled up to the students the gunmen asked for one teen by name, got confirmation, and then started to shoot into the crowd.

The names and ages of the seven victims have not been released but at least two of those shot are in critical condition and two more are in serious condition.  The victims span in age from 14-16; 3 are girls, 4 are boys.  Only five of the injured were students at Cody High School, the other two were just at the bus stop, and it is unclear if any of the victims even knew one another.

Two gunmen, possibly three, emerged from the green minivan and "asked for a person by name" before they "opened fire at the crowd," Detroit Police spokesman Rod Liggons told WXYZ-TV.

The students' names and ages weren't immediately released.

"We have confirmed the name of several of the students, but we have to make sure we talk with the parents," Detroit Public Schools emergency financial manager Robert Bobb said at the scene of the shooting on Detroit's west side.

They are so young, how can this be!? When I was this age, I was too involved in drama class to do anything else.

Suspect of Detroit School Shooting has turned himself in.  Police are still looking for the second shooter.  Police is also working on making route from and to the school safe.  No motive has been stated yet.

I hope all the children lived and there will be no lasting injuries.  Did the police ever release any infomration regarding the shooters' motive?

This is why I suggest that school curriculums should all have non-violent conflict resolution as a required subject.  Religion was removed from public schools, and I agree that religion should not be taught there because there is no consensus on what religion to teach.  However, there are secular classes that should fill the void to promote positive character traits in students.  Removing chapel from public schools does not have to mean that we should not try to instill values in schoolchildren that will help them live wholesome lives and become more well-balanced and productive citizens.

Non-violent conflict resolution and anger management classes should begin at least by the time students are in junior high school.  The students’ participation may help them throughout their lives.  Another benefit would be that during class discussions, teachers may learn about bullies on campus and other potentially dangerous situations in time to diffuse them.
