Mayor Mike Bloomberg giving a speech at the Ribbon Cutting for the new High Bridge Access Trail at 165th Street and Edgecombe Avenue in the Washington Heights Neighborhood of Manhattan. Standing to his right is Miguel Martinez, city council member for District 10. Highbridge Park was one of the city's most neglected parks for years, it was virtually abandoned. When Bette Midler's New York Restoration Program helped clean up the park they removed 20,000 tons of garbage, including 8,000 tires. The New Access Trail leads directly to the High Bridge, the oldest bridge in New York City which has been closed for close to 30 years. The High Bridge will undergo restoration starting in Spring 2009 and be opened to the public in 2012. As part of today's event we were allowed to walk across the bridge with the warning to stay away from the railings. I was thrilled to get a sneak preview of this wonderful bridge.
M is for Mayor Mike
