"History is going to judge us"
are the words of the Mayor of San Diego, Jerry Sanders. No, he is not a Democrat. He is a Republican, and like more and more Republicans, he is embracing gay rights and marriage equality. He is exactly right, those who opposed the right and ability to marry will be judged by future generations the same way we judge those who denied interracial couples the right to marry.

Mayor Sanders also stated, "this is an equality issue, nothing more, nothing less." He is exactly right. Gays don't want a different form of marriage and they definately don't want to interfere in the marriages of others. They just want the same right to marry the person they love, that non-gays now enjoy.

There is petition drive of marriage equality mayors entitled Mayors for Freedom to Marry. There are 153 mayors currently signed. Mayor Sanders, whose own daughter is gay, takes the denial of their right to personally.
He said, "The courage of people who have come out has really changed the landscape. When people are in the closet, nobody ever knew any gays or lesbians, or didn't think they did. Pretty easy to demonize someone like that. When it's your family, when it's your friend, when it's a coworker or someone you know and respect, all of a sudden you realize they're just like we are."

Oh by the way, our own Mayor Tom Barrett is one of the mayors who has signed on. Way to go Mr. Mayor.

Finally, please send an e-mail  to President Obama urging him to finally support same sex marriage equality. I mean, in 2011 numerous polls showed for the first time majority support of same sex marriage equality. Within his own party, his position of non-support is becoming a smaller fraction of the Democratic base everyday.
