McCain is expected to name his VP one week from today.  Speculation has moved outside of the Beltway as General Petraeus name is lighting up the blogs.  Senator McCain had to write a letter of apology for using the General in a campaign shoot as the Military says it must stay outside of the realm of the political.

Senator John McCain has narrowed his list of potential running mates to a handful of candidates and appears unlikely to select anyone who supports abortion rights, several advisers close to his campaign said on Thursday.

Former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota are the top candidates as Mr. McCain and his advisers gather over the next several days at Mr. McCain’s cabin near Sedona, they said.

McCain associates recently put forth two other candidates, former Gov. Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania and Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut, as possibilities. Both men support abortion rights.

People close to the campaign also floated a wild-card choice, Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top American commander in Iraq. They said it was not beyond the realm of possibility that Mr. McCain would ask him to join the ticket, although General Petraeus has no experience in elective government and has said repeatedly that he is not interested in the vice presidency.

One adviser characterized General Petraeus, who presided over a recent reduction of violence in Iraq, as more of a wish-list candidate for Mr. McCain, who, like the general, long supported sending additional troops to quell the insurgency. The adviser said the campaign was putting forth his name in part in a bid for attention at a time when Senator Barack Obama’s choice of running mate, which is to be announced in the next few days, was dominating the media.

Is Condoleezza Rice's name still being mentioned as a possible candidate?

Julian, I don't think so. I would like to say though that we've come a long way since a few years ago when she was being touted as the next president. How times change.

politisite, I like this story. It's good stuff. Now that would be a step in the right direction.

As for Condoleezza, well he recent gaffe about the russians as the only ones since the 60s invading foreign countries and toppling regimes puts her in the comedy catagory.

Petraeus is a ricky choice.  It would send a message that McCain's number one priority is waging war.  He is weak on economics and I would suggest someone more associated with business or the economy as a balance.

Like Mitt Romney?

Personally, I would have rather the republican's presidential nominee be Romney in the first place.

I like Bobby Jindal.  He adds youth and "diversity".  He is well spoken without being slick.

politisite, I like this story. It's good stuff.

We've been waiting so long for the VP picks that no matter who is picked it's going to be a letdown. This has been the earliest starting campaign in history and we're going to find out the VP picks almost later than any other campaign season in history.

Get it over with!

Check out my Obama Bayh story.  I told folks to turn off there cell phones until tommarrow as the text for vp will no go out until 3 hours prior to the announcement.

The VP sticker thing is getting traction but it is bogus.  Gov Kaine is Out and Clinton wasn't vetted.  I agree.. lets get it over already.

I have it from a good source that McCain will announce next Friday... The source, McCain so its not breaking news
