McCain reaches out to Latinos for votes
John McCain is in a delicate political position.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee is hoping to appeal to increasingly influential Hispanic electorates in California, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado and other Western states while reassuring law-and-order conservatives that he is serious about stopping the inflow of illegal immigrants.
Politically, polls have Hispanics continuing to trend toward Democrats.OAS_AD('ArticleFlex_1')');-->
Still, McCain is vowing to win over the constituency even as he continues to call for tightened borders as the prerequisite to the more comprehensive reforms many voters seek. He also is avoiding taking on Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio over his controversial neighborhood crime sweeps.
"A lot of times it saddens me to see these conflicting approaches toward the issue of illegal immigration because we would not have this problem if the federal government had carried out its responsibilities," McCain said Monday during a Cinco de Mayo news conference in Phoenix.
