This is interesting to know, when you hear McCain sympathize with Americans and the middle class. No wonder he feels bad, he is afraid you will hold him accountable. Straight Talk Express John......

Banking Deregulation and the 2008 Mortgage Crisis

Later in his Senate career, Gramm spearheaded efforts to pass banking reform laws, including the landmark Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in 1999, which served to reduce government regulations in existence since the Great Depression separating banking, insurance and brokerage activities.

Years later, critics of Gramm point out that this same legislation may have been pivotal in encouraging he corporate practices that led to the 2008 mortgage crises in America.[5]

Between 1995 and 2000 Gramm, who was the chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, received $1,000,914 in campaign contributions from the Securities & Investment industry.[6]

Later, as lobbyist for Swiss bank UBS, Gramm pressured congress ease it's restrictions on predatory lending tactics by mortgage brokers. For his efforts, Gramm received $750,000 from UBS in during a one year period starting in 2007.[7].

John McCain presidential campaign, 2008

He was John McCain’s presidential campaign co-chair[8] and his most senior economic adviser[9] from summer 2007[10] to July 18, 2008.[8]

While advising the McCain campaign, Gramm was being paid by UBS to lobby Congress about the U.S. mortgage crisis. During this time, "the mortgage industry pressed Congress to roll back strong state rules that sought to stem the rise of predatory tactics used by lenders and brokers to place homeowners in high-cost mortgages."[11] According to Politico.com, Gramm had input on McCain's March 26, 2008 policy speech on the mortgage crisis.[11]

In a July 9, 2008 interview explaining McCain's plans in reforming the U.S. economy, Gramm downplayed the idea that the nation was in a recession, stating, "You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession," and "We have sort of become a nation of whiners, you just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline."[12]

Gramm's comments immediately became a campaign issue. McCain's opponent, Senator Barack Obama, said, "America already has one Dr. Phil. We don't need another one when it comes to the economy. ... This economic downturn is not in your head."[13] McCain strongly denounced Gramm's comments.[14] Gramm later attempted to clarify his comment, explaining that he had used the word "whiners" to describe the nation's politicians rather than the public, stating "the whiners are the leaders."[15] In the same interview, Gramm stated, "I'm not going to retract any of it. Every word I said was true."[16]

On July 18, 2008 Gramm stepped down from his position with the McCain campaign.[17]

And another famous quote of Phil Gramm:

  • "Most people don't have the luxury of living to be 80 years old, so it's hard for me to feel sorry for them." - (in response to a statement that a Social Security proposal would hurt people over 80)[21]

iraqivetwifeforchange, I like this story. It's good stuff.  It seems easy to blame the Republican's for everything.  Problem is the legislation was signed by Bill Clinton who was an advocate of deregulation himself.  The 2006-2008 congress has not forwarded one piece of legislation for regulation for the President to sign.  So those on the other side could easily say, the Democrats are at fought.

What I think about these failed banks, loan, companies is that they do not have a personal relationship with those they serve like in the 60s-70s.  I am sad for the loss of jobs for those who work for these companies but, the days were your local grocer knew you and would extend you credit, your gas station would extend you credit, your local bank would hod your mortgage.  They knew you so well that if you had tough times they would cut you a break.  Your name meant something.  I am glad these large companies are falling as they are only part of the move away from local business and large companies who could care less about you.

It was a much better world when we ate local, banked local.... Its a wonderful life... why did we let Potter buy us out.

I have no love for senator Graham.  I live in SC.  Many of us like to call him the former Senator Graham.  I voted against him in the last primary for an underfunded good man who was not McCains right hand.

iraqivetwifeforchange, this rarely happens, but even though I originally thought this story was Good Stuff, I now have some questions.

Did you reveal all your sources?

I also wanted to confirm that you actually witnessed the event, or that you added information that you research on your own.

For some reason, my number 21. on my source list showed up, but not my source itself. I forgot to add it. It is Bob Hubert, The New York Times, July, 2008. And Wikipedia. I have other references to add. Again, my highlight did not show up. When I went to add the picture. I tried to do it the way someone suggested in a message but apparently it didn't work.

Other than that, yes, all of my sources are listed.

As opposed to McCain, an American traitor. Article 5 of the military code of conduct... McCain should be tried and hung or shot. And we have the Republicans to thanks for the wonderful videos and evidence on that. Not one Democrat spoke in those tapes, not 1. It was ALL Republicans.

McCain and Bush did not even give 1 rat's ass about Osama. Now that their security efforts are once again questioned by the 9-11 commission, and the truth about Osama are being questioned, Bush makes some feeble attempt to "appear" to be going after him. Only his troops won't go until February. They fed the Saudi machine that pumps out more terrorists in the last 7 years than any other country with oil revenues. They have essentially funded the terrorists opposition to us.

The truth is, that for 20 years, all of the patriotic rhetoric coming from the right has finally shown it's true colors. They are as faded as the wrinkles on McCain's forehead.

iraqivetwifeforchange, I am sorry to say that pretty much this whole piece is a wikipedia article from here - including the references.

Please use the highlight tool as we have asked you before - when you post like this it looks like your own work, when in fact it is not.

Any questions, please ask me,

Thanks

Again, I tried the highlight, It was fine until I went in to add the picture afterwards, and the highlight disappeared. As for things I contributed, #21. The New York Times is my source and reference. It did not show on the article, though I tried to add it to my highlight, but I did list it in response to a reply. I tried to do it like dunkelberg  suggested in a private message but apparently, it didn't work. I tried to add it after I posted the article in edit, but that didn't work.

I was told by others that this is a problem they have encountered as well. I am not sure who to report this to, but it does seem to be persistent. Adding pictures after a story is highlighted does seem to mess it all up.

It wasn't entirely copied:  You added you're own title, with provoacative diction:  McCain's good buddy Gramm, the Architect for deregulation on Wall Street

Nice...and biased.

I searched through tools and could not find anything to delete and try again. Not in edit, moderate, tools. Anywhere. If someone is going to flag it, perhaps they would be so kind as to tell me how to get this to work. I spent several hours on this trying to find a way to delete or edit and put the highlights back in.

Go to this page here.

If you are using Firefox, download the highlight for Firefox; if you are using Internet Explorer, download the highlight for Internet Explorer.

The tool should appear on your browser, if it doesn't you can drag it in there and make sure all tools are displayed.

Then, when you want to highlight something you can push that button on the browser and the highlight tool will pop up for you on the bottom of the screen.

Alternatively, have a read of this forum post. There is a handy video to watch that explains how to use highlight.

I have never encountered the text disappearing when you add a picture, but you can just message me when that happens and I will take a look.

Thanks so much.

I have firefox. I have used highlight. Occasionally, there is a problem. The highlight box disappears when you go in to add a picture after you have entered the report. I have mentioned this on several of my reports. And editing it afterwards, to try to add the highlight back in doesn't work.

I will have to check out the forum to see if anyone has a solution for this. I did not know we had a forum here. I also need to see how to add more highlights in one report, or add highlights to a reply. I have tried and I have not been successful.
