"I'm still a Republican." Those were Martin McGuinness' words after his historic handshake today with Queen Elizabeth, behind closed doors in Belfast.

The Queen and the former IRA commander met privately at Belfast's Lyric theatre during an event celebrating the arts in Ireland.

President Michael D Higgins, who also attended the event, described the exchange as "another important step on the journey to reconciliation on this island".
