Media can be categorized as the second government. It can popularize or defame anything big in any country. When media information is based on facts and truth, it can even be more than a government influencing people and changing situations.
The bad news is that most media in any country are serving as pressure group magnifying their government’s performance on minor things. These media disseminate information from top to down instead of bottom up (i.e. from people to government) so that governments can take corrective actions. This is what makes local media less than a second government. What is the use of disseminating information from top to bottom? This has, of course, relevance but not as much as information from bottom to up.
But there are also international media like BBC, CNN, etc, their information of which is trustworthy, their reporters bold enough to dig facts and expose realities and, therefore, highly influential to make a difference, say for example, in influencing for change of a wrong government policy, undemocratic governance, etc through their fact-based information. Such media can be categorized as second government with international respect.
However, it does not mean that all international media are totally acceptable. These media, although better than local media, are also chasing information from VIP people. They do not give value to the voice of ordinary people (the bottom of the pyramid). They are also highly focused on minor issues of advanced countries than major issue in poor or underdeveloped countries. This must be changed. Media need to stand for people than for governments and VIP people only. NowPublic is the best giving a chance to ordinary people to breath, at least!

This post was inspired by reading yours. I look at the report about government, and when I see something that to me is incorrect, I yell about it.
I want the youth of out nation to tune in.

Belayneh,
I agree that the media is extremely powerful. In fact, I would think that it is more powerful than the government. Presidents, Congressmen and Senators all come and go where media ownership is more or less constant.
The media is directly involved in deciding any politician's future. If he is not approved, the media outlet they will dig and dig until they find the politico's Achilles heel. If he is approved by the media outlet, it's make-up and feel good stories.
It would be nice to think media outlets like BBC and CNN are truly non-bias but I find that they are politicized by the ownership. It is this private ownership who decides what is the news.
Even in open source media like Nowpublic.com there are forms of political influence and censorship. I wrote on this in the Forum piece Freedom of Press Nowpublic Style based on my experience.
Let me know what you think.

Dear Utilaeastwind
You are completely right that media is powerful more than government. You are also right that no media is free of bias.
But my message is based on relativity theory. Relatively international private or pseudo private media are better than local media set themselves as pressure groups of the groupthink political group!

Belayneh,
I disagree that international news media is better because they set themselves as pressure groups. This would mean that they are not even acting as journalists, only propaganda machines supporting the owner's beliefs.
I agree with you that Nowpublic is an excellent form of media presentation. It is very participatory and generally apolitical.
