Meteorite Strikes SUV in Ontario

A golf ball sized meteorite smashed through the windshield of an SUV belonging to an Ontario woman, Yvonne Garshinky.  It came from a piece of meteorite that streaked across the sky above Southern Ontario on the night of September 25th.

Originally, Garshinsky wasn't sure if the rock that struck her vehicle came from the same meteorite showers that night.  To figure this out, she brought the rock to astronomers at the University of Western Ontario, who were able to verify that it did indeed come from the meteorite of September 25th and estimated the age of the rock to be roughly 4.6 billion years old.  It turned out to be a vital discovery because no other pieces of the meteorite have yet to be recovered.

The meteorite showers on September 25 were widely captured on film by UWO's network of cameras throughout Southern Ontario.  These footages, which have been posted on youtube, are important because they allow researchers to estimate the meteor's speed at 75,000 km/h and reconstruct it's entire orbit before coming to Earth.

"We can also figure out where it came from and how it got here, which is rare," said Phil McCausland, a postdoctoral fellow at UWO's planetary science centre, in a statement. "In all of history, only about a dozen meteorite falls have that kind of record."
