A small kitchen fire in downtown Vancouver turned out to be a meth lab. Fire fighters entered the premises to discover crystal meth making equipment and chemicals. They quickly retreated and contacted Hazmat who arrived shortly thereafter. The building was evacuated and hazmat is still in the process of removing the materials.
UPDATE: It's now 1 am and we're finally back in our apartments. Hazmat has left the chemicals for disposal tomorrow and possibly the next day. All the residents of the 9th floor will be evacuated all day and possibly night tomorrow while they clean out the lab. From talking with other residents, it seems the person living and operating the lab may be well known (and responsible for several car break-ins a couple of years ago), though this is unsubstantiated at this time. I'm just thankful, after 4 hours of homelessness in the cool Vancouver spring night, that I don't live on the 9th floor.
