Mexican Soldiers Kill 2 Monterrey Tech Students in Crossfire
Army soldiers were chasing 3 vehicles of suspected drug traffickers when one of them stopped at the entrance of Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico Friday and a shootout occurred. The students were mistaken for drug traffickers while jumping a fence and killed in the crossfire.
The University and family have demanded an investigation. Jorge Antonio Mercado Alonso, 23, who had studied mechanics in Saltillo and was in a Masters program and Javier Arredondo Verdugo, 24, who was studying for his Ph.D will return to Todos Santos Baja California Sur for burial.
Violence in Monterrey is a growing problem due to the "war on drugs" and corrupt officials.
The Mexican government has apologized to the families of two students killed early Friday who officials initially said were drug gang members.

These young students' lives snuffed out with such violence and carelessness is beyond tragic. Mexico is suffering from the insatiable appetite for drugs in America.
