September 20

The death toll from grenade attacks on an independence day celebration in central Mexico rose to eight on Saturday when a 13-year-old died in a hospital after fighting for his life for five days.

Michoacan state Gov. Leonel Godoy told local radio of the latest death from injuries sustained in Monday's attack in the colonial city of Morelia, capital of the drug gang-infested state of Michoacan.

Mexico has to declare Independence from this century's oppressor. Drug Dealers, in the past the conquest of Mexico was driven by the lust for gold. Nowadays it's driven by a lust of power and money. The Spaniards victory over Mexico had a factor of great importance they took advantage of with help from their Mexican Translator and lover of Herman Cortes "La Malinche" being that factor, a divided nation with many internal wars for power. read more about Mexico's independence and the Father who fathered a country  here

While our president Felipe Calderon was giving "El grito" or the cry for freedom, many where chanting insults while at the same time the oppositor party was giving their own "grito" with whom they call the "official president" Jose Lopez Obrador. Clearly still a divided nation..... without strength to fight this new oppressor already within the core of our nation.

Calderon participated Monday night in "El Grito" in Mexico City's central Zocalo square where tens of thousands of people gathered without incident to mark the event.
Except the insults, having two "gritos" at the same time and the tragedy registered in Morelia
MEXICO CITY (AFP) - At least three people died with another 50 wounded overnight when twin explosions ripped through a Mexican independence day celebration in Morelia, the government said Tuesday.

President Felipe Calderon's office said it "condemned the violence in the strongest terms and will double efforts to support the ongoing investigation and to rid Michoacan of these crimes and violence."

Governor Leonel Godoy of Michoacan state confirmed the toll from the explosions in a main square in the center of the city where thousands of people had gathered to commemorate the 198th anniversary of independence, according to the websites of Mexican newspapers.

The explosions occurred shortly before midnight (0500 GMT) and just after the beginning of a re-enactment of the cry of independence known as "El Grito," a traditional ceremony celebrated throughout the country.

The attack took place in the city where our president Felipe Calderon was born, drug dealers?

The explosions hit crowds gathered in Morelia's central square

The explosions happened shortly before midnight, as people gathered in the centre of the western city of Morelia.

Local media reports suggest they may have been caused by grenades.

The city is the capital of Michoacan, a state hit by a wave of drug gang violence in recent years. It is not known who was behind Monday's blasts.

Drug-related violence in Mexico has claimed the lives of more than 2,700 people so far this year.

Shoot-out

The explosions went off in the main square of Morelia as the crowds celebrated the beginning of the traditional reenactment of Mexico's cry for independence, known as El Grito, or The Shout.

Dozens of police officers were involved in a shoot-out after chasing suspects near the scene, the local El Sol de Morelia newspaper reported.

Update:  CBC is reporting that the death toll in these blasts is now at 7.

At least seven people are dead and 101 wounded after a grenade attack shattered Mexican Independence Day celebrations Monday in the western city of Morelia.

Two grenades exploded just before midnight as people gathered in the centre of Morelia, capital of the state of Michoacan, said local officials.

Citing witness reports, Michoacan's governor said it appeared someone launched several grenades into the crowd as he was delivering the traditional "grito," or shout for independence.

"Without a doubt, we believe this was done by organized crime," Leonel Godoy told Mexico's Televisa network.

Michoacan has experienced a spike in violence after Mexican President Felipe Calderon, who took power in 2006, started to crack down on drug trafficking and related gang activity, reported Agence France-Presse.

Thank you all for the flags and comments. This is getting to be really dangerous. I went to "El Grito" celebration last year and it's sad to imagine something of this tragic magnitude can happen when you are having a nice time celebrating with the family. It's getting to be terrorism as the word means.

I am not Mexican... but I am deeply effected by the violent events taking place all over Mexico.  As a fellow human I am appalled and saddened.

I have many friends and loved ones in Mexico that want to effect change.  They have started a movement to end the violence in a peaceful way.  Here is their website:

As Margaret Mead once said: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Thanks a lot for your comment, I like what Margaret Mead said which reminds me of

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
