Forty-one prisoners have escaped from a jail in Matamoros, Mexico just across the border from Brownsville, Texas.

Authorities confirmed that the prisoners were being held at the "Centro de Ejecución de Sanciones" in Matamoros

The prison in Matamoros is a state institution but most of the convicts who were being held there, and who escaped are federal prisoners.

State leaders in Mexico have complained in the past that they do not have facilities secure enough to accommodate more serious, federally charged prisoners.

Details are of the Mexican prisoner escape are still unfolding and officials say they will have more information shortly.
