Mexico´s Real Independence Date Sept. 27, 1821
The Army of the Three Guarantees led by General Agustín Iturbide made its triumphal entry into Mexico City on September 27, 1821, consummating Mexico’s independence.
Mexico´s war of independence one of the longest in Latin America had lasted for 11 years, time of many deaths, defeats and arrests that had reduced the original movement to a guerrilla war which refused to die thanks to the bravery of men such as Vicente Guerrero. The Spanish troops led by Iturbide and the rebels led by Vicente Guerrero allied themselves with the Plan of Iguala. The Army of the Three Guarantees was the result of the union of forces between Guerrero and Iturbide to assure Independence from Spain.
For some reason Mexico celebrates The Proclamation of Independence as a national holiday and not the consummation which took place 11 years later.
The call “Religión, Independencia y Unión” became the motto for The Army of the Three Guarantees made up of the forces of Augustin de Iturbide and Vicente Guerrero.
Iturbide, proclaimed himself emperor of Mexico in May 1822. He held the position with some difficulty until March 1823.
Years later Vicente Guerrero in a coup d'état took the presidency becoming the second president of Mexico on April 1, 1829. During his short term as president he ordered an immediate abolition of slavery.
