Mexico Tonalá River Bridge Collapse Death Toll At Least 8
At least 8 people have been declared dead after a bridge collapse over the Tonalá River in southeastern Mexico. Five cars plunged into the river.
To be updated when more information comes in.
At least five vehicles plunged into a river Friday when a bridge collapsed in southeastern Mexico, the government-run Notimex news agency said.
There were no immediate reports of the extent of injuries or fatalities, not did officials give a cause for the bridge collapse. Three of the vehicles were tractor-trailers, Notimex said.
The bridge spans the Tonala River between the cities of Agua Dulce and Tabasco.
The tractor trailers are a possible cause of the collapse; potentially being too heavy for the bridge to support. The machinery carried by the trailers quickly sunk into the river.
Fishing boats rescued three people from the river while divers have been sent in to locate other bodies.
The area is known for its traffic congestion.
