Mexico's Massive Public Kissing breaks Guinness Record
Happy Valentine's Day!
After an hour delay, Record Guinness is broken with 39 mil 897 persons kissing at the same time.
Mexico puckered its way to a new record on Valentine's Day, when nearly 40,000 people locked lips with their sweeties to beat the world record of simultaneous kisses, previously held by Britain.
The new record was set late Saturday, when 39,897 people crowded into the Mexican capital for the group smooch.
"There are 42,225 people on site, but unfortunately you did not all participate in the record," announced Carlos Martinez, a Guinness official who was monitoring the crowds.
"The number of participants is 39,987 and the new record for the number of people kissing simultaneously goes to Mexico," he said.
The British record had been 32,648 people.
Tourist groups and community activists organized the event to make a statement against violence in Mexico, where more than 5,300 people were killed in 2008 due to a rash of drug feuds and rampant criminal activity.
The group kiss also aimed to send a message to a local mayor who tried to ban kissing in the public square.
Update:

GUANAJUATO, Mexico — Once upon a time, there was a city where people came from far and wide to kiss.
The place was blessed with gold and silver, but its kissing legend, passed down like an heirloom, made it rich beyond measure. It tells of a fair maid named Ana who fell in love with Carlos, a poor miner who lived across a narrow alley. The young lovers met on their balconies, stretching across the tiny gap to kiss in the moonlight.
But their love was star-crossed: Ana’s father forbade the romance, and threatened to kill his daughter if he discovered the lovers together again. The next night, he caught them and, true to his warning, stabbed Ana with a dagger. Dying, Ana reached out and Carlos kissed her hand — the couple’s final kiss.

Of all the things a crowd of people can do in public, I think that kissing is perhaps the least threatening.

Thanks Jordan, this massive kissing event is also a protest against the violence we have been living.

This is a magical town where just being there it feels like a dream. This was my first time being in Guanajuato and I hope is not the last.
