Miami Herald to fire 250 employees
Caracas, Venezuela, 16 June 2008. Miami Herald newspaper is going to make 250 of its full time employees redundant. For Miami Herald President, David Landsberg, this 17% reduction of its workforce was implemented as an strategy to counteract decreasing profits. It is a very a very... "painful but necessary step,' Landsberg added. In 2001, the newspaper did a similar shrinking move. It cut off 10% of its full time working force.
The McClatchy Company group owns the Miami Herald. Even though it is not the oldest newspaper of Miami, it has managed to gain great popularity. Anti Castro campaigners usually voice their ideas through it. However, the Miami Herald had to fired three journalists on September 8, 2006 for moonlighting for the United States Government in anti-Cuba propaganda TV and radio channels. It is still unclear whether the staff reduction would affect coverage from Latin America and Caribbean bureau.

rahul, I like this story. It's good stuff. Yikes! I have friends there. But scanning the list of jobs, it doesn't look like their gigs.

Rahul, on my front page this is only showing up in "local" (and I'm in OK!). Do you have this filed under one of the main categories? I think this is an important issue and needs to be in one of those.

Pep, Thanks for the good mark! This story is listed under "world" tag category. However, it also shown in local as I registered "South America" and "Caribbean" tag categories too. I do agree, it is indeed an important issue for all to read. Thus, I will improve its tag categories a bit.

I'm glad it's under world. Maybe we're having some transition stuff again, because I didn't see it in world. But Friday it was taking forever for stuff to make it to the "new" front page feed.

The newspaper biz continues to be a highly tumultuous industry and this is further proof that money is being lost hand over fist. 17% is a huge chunk of the Herald's workforce.

Its strange that American cars and American newspapers are starting to go under at the same time.

rahul, I like this story. It's good stuff.
Further, as more of the "traditional" news companies cut staff to maintain profitability, reporting news via such solutions like NowPublic becomes much more viable. We the People!!! :)
