Calling Rush Limbaugh’s attacks on him “cartoonish,” Michael J. Fox delighted audience members of “The Daily Show” with his thoughts on the controversial conservative radio host.
During the 2006 mid-term elections, Fox, who suffers from Parkinson's, campaigned for candidates supportive of more federal funding for stem cell research. Many believe that stem cell research holds the cure to diseases such as Parkinson's.
Limbaugh, an opponent of stem cell research, accused the former “Spin City” star of
deliberately not taking his medication so that his Parkinson’s symptoms would appear more exacerbated during the filming of political ads.
"He is exaggerating the effects of the disease. He's moving all around and shaking and it's purely an act,” Limbaugh opined during an October 2006 radio show. “This is really shameless of Michael J. Fox. Either he didn't take his medication or he's acting."
When “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart asked Fox what his reaction was to having his motives be so impugned, Fox answered, “People think that’s when it got bad for me, but that’s when it got fun.”
“When he kind of launched his attack, there was this moment where I went ‘Oh my god, is it that predictable? Is it that cartoonish that you attack the messenger in this way and not deal with the merits of the science at all?’” Fox recalled.
