Michel Thibodeau Was Awarded $12,000 For Not Being Served on an Air Canada Flight in French

This is why we can't have nice things. For every legitimate rule out there, we have to have a guy like Michel Thibodeau who has it follow the letter of the law so closely that it ruins it for everyone.

In case you haven't heard, Michel Thibodeau is the guy who successfully sued Air Canada because he didn't receive service in French, one of Canada's two official languages, during a flight from Montreal to Ottawa.

Michel Thibodeau and wife Lynda sued the airline, stating that he didn't get served in French when he checked in and when he was served a drink. Thibodeau reportedly was given a Sprite when he requested a 7Up.

Under the Official Languages Act, Air Canada must be able to communicate and provide services in French and English, especially on routes where they might be demand for both languages.

A court decided to award Thibodeau $12,000 for his inconvenience. If that sounds like a ridiculous sum, consider that he originally asked a Federal Court for $525,000 in damages. Air Canada was also told to issue an apology.

Thibodeau has filed similar suits in the past.

All This Over a 7UP?

First off, what really stands out about this guy is not the language thing, but the fact that he got upset about getting a Sprite instead of a 7Up. As anyone can tell you, these are basically the same drink. To be fussy enough to be upset about getting one over the other proves you're the kind of guy who is looking for things to complain about.

By the way, Mr. Thibodeau, Sprite is made by Coca-Cola while 7Up is produced by Pepsi. Very rarely do establishments carry both Sprite and 7Up since they tend to have an exclusive agreement with one soft drink manufacturer.

When someone asks for a Coke in a restaurant and the waitress says "Is Pepsi OK?" the vast majority people say yes. They don't think of it as a human rights violation.

Not Really About French of English

All this is to say that the Michel Thibodeau thing really isn't about language. Many Canadians will no doubt get fired up about the Michel Thibodeau story, saying it shows how unreasonable French-Canadians can be about language. But it isn't really about being English or French. It's about being a dick or not being a dick.

Some people have a hard time understanding that not everything works out they way it should. Yes, Air Canada should have someone who can speak French on their flights. But shit happens. Maybe the flight attendant who normally works that shift was sick that day. Life isn't always fair. Instead of wasting our time and taxpayer dollars dealing with this, it would be best to realize that sometimes things don't work out as planned.

Now unfortunately, Michel Thibodeau's love of 7Up and the letter of the law will make things more difficult for everybody. No doubt, Air Canada, a company that is just getting by at the best of times, will likely have to change all sorts of human resources protocols to make sure this doesn't happen again. Far worse, guys like Thibodeau make it far more difficult for people with legitimate grievances to be heard.

It would be nice to think that Thibodeau sued Air Canada out of principle. Perhaps he could donate some of his settlement to one of the many worthy charities out there. If we had to guess, he'll just buy some more 7Up.

It is sad what people do for money. At least Canada is bilingual compare to America if someone speak two languages it is simply because they come from another country but most people from this country do not want to learn another language. People from other countries know at least two or more languages. Shame on you Michel Thibodeau for sueing Air Canada just because you are greedy for money. Why don't you learn another language like some of us?It is great to speak two languages. I speak two languages and next month will learn another.

This does nothing to improve Canada's relationships between it's diverse people.  We Anglos will again sigh at the unreasonableness of the Francophones and how they keep having to fuss over everything.  The Francophones will again raise a fist in defiance at the giant culture steamrolling over their very characters and personalities, obliterating what makes them special.  The guy should have gotten a win, but far far smaller, perhaps a multiple of what he paid for his ticket and a year's supply of sept jusqu'à en bottlier (I can not read, write, nor speak French, sorry.)

I can't say I'm unsympathetic with the Quebec plight.  I see they feel very threatened.  But then if I'd conquered Canada I've have subsumed them like the Cajuns in Louisiana have been absorbed, because that's what makes the future country more unified.  The brits were too willing to give concessions and the descendants pay.  I don't know if the french would be happier, we'd have to ask the cajuns and compare with acadians as well as quebecois to get a reasonable assessment.  Better to be a pocket culture holding out against a whole country, or a small nation without sovereignty in a foreign culture?

I can't say I enjoy living with the battle, though.

Note that, in subsequent interviews, Thibodeau shied well away from the issue of language in Quebec... since he knew that his core argument was inherently silly.

This guy is a tool and exercising his rights in a reprehensible manner.  Shame on you Michel Thibodeau for wasting our time and further alienating your language, your cause and your people...you are a stupid person.  If you have any principles, donate your money to charity.

Michel Thibodeau, you are scum of the earth, move to Kebec where you will fit right in.

The great phony bilingual scam. Its all about jobs and money…

The simple facts are as more francophone’s get hired for all government positions less and less English speakers are working for their own governments across the country. Don’t believe me; Go check the stats for yourself. Francophone’s are over-represented in all levels of government including hospitals, law, policing...etc. No fairness, no representation by population. They call it bilingualism, yet the term is never defined on purpose and believe me it doesn’t mean fluency in 2 languages in Canada, at least to the French it doesn’t. No political party will speak for the English speaking majority in this province and country. Practical bilingualism, where numbers warrant… is never defined on purpose. In Ontario it now means segregation. The French (they are actually metis, not french)) are demanding French only facilities all over the province, not bilingual, French only.$ Bilingualism is really nothing more then a hiring quota for francophone’s and that is a fact…just ask yourself, why are francophone’s over-represented in all government jobs and how come more and more positions are being designated bilingual all the time?

Go learn our proud, real BNA and UEL history. These were the builders of our country since 1763, not this phony, revisionist lie, spin, nonsense, this bilingual, multicultural,2 founding nations, linguistic duality lie, spin, propaganda that we’ve been living with since Trudeau and Kebec (original spelling) forced this upon the nation. We’ve been part of the British Empire since 1763 and officially and English speaking country for over 200 years, again just the facts...We were never a bilingual country. This is one big expressive lie/fraud that’s been going on for over 5 decades now.

So while Quebec bans the English language (bill 22, bill 178, bill 101…). While ethnic language cleansing is going on in Quebec, the rest of the country is forced to fund whatever the French demand. This is going on in every province. Go check.

Time to end this phony, expensive hiring scam.

wow??? Can I sue the government? Maybe for the grief and frustration over all the whining and BS coming from Quebecors, and the other special interest group. Maybe I should sue because of all the taxpayer money waisted in this area. Or maybe i should sue because I can't get a doctor or health care or a job, because I'm not a special interest person.

Warning to English Canada. Michel Thibodeau represents the reason I moved out of Quebec. When I lived in Quebec, I actually got turned down for job because my name was not French. I had separatists see English words on my jacket and demand to hear me speak in French. People is stores just walked away and refused to serve me. Don't forget that during the worst of the language police times, separatists would damage stores with any English words visible. This is what Michel Thibodeau represents. People like that will go out of their way to make you miserable. Out of their way. My mom was sick and couldn't get anyone to help her at a hospital in Quebec. No one spoke English. Not a bloody one helped her. She left feeling more sick. Where was freakin Thibodeau then? Had Thibodeau been there, he would probably have simply stood there lecturing her and taking her name down to report her for speaking English. If you live in the West you probably don't realize how miserable the separatists can make you feel. How they eat away at what have started as a nice pleasant day, when they make give you problems. But if you allow them to continue taking control, then in the West you will find out soon enough! Thibodeau doesn't care that he got an employee in trouble. His eyes are lit out with the need to attack English Canada. Where there is calmness, there is Thibodeau and his fellow separatists, ready to try to plow through everything English. I hope the air canada employee can keep his/her job and gets a lot of reassurance. And I hope Thibodeau is blacklisted everywhere. He is scum. I've seen him in action. Note to all of you Anglophones who currently work with him in any capacity. He will go out of his way to back stab you, because you are not Francophone. I repeat. He will go out of his way. Just because your English. This should be obvious of course. Hopefully you don't own a shop with English in Quebec because if Thibodeau finds out... English Canada, the French are invading the city of ottawa (moving in), and federal government. The largest percentage of government positions are filled by francophones. They are spreading in and taking control. And yet Anglophone Canadians represent 75% of taxpayers. While maybe 75% of government workers are French. If you're Anglophone, it's time to put a line in the sand. And time to push back. We Anglophones have been far to nice and to passive to the pushy separatists and the lemmings like Michel Thibodeau. When you go to Quebec, demand English service, and report any place that refuses you. Get anyone who doesn't provide it in trouble. Time to show lemmings like Thibodeau, that while we Anglophones are nice, we're also bigger. What they do to use, we now do back. If we don't fight now, then 10 or 20 years down the road, it will be English Canada that has lost its way and its culture. Toronto may be next to be invaded by separatists, down the road. Again lemmings like Thibodeau will go out of their way to ruin your day:  if your an English person; if your just on vacation in Quebec minding your own business and they overhear you speaking English; if your name is English; try to get you fired if your English; back stab you if your English; not hire you if your English. If you are English, please consider moving to Ottawa.

Your message is a proof of your inability to learn another language and your lack of flexibility and your selfcentreness wherever you live. Francophone learn english for necessity and they defend themselves more often than you think in english.  Did you put yourself once in their shoes.  I believe no. What you gone a do when we all have to learn Mandarin?

Something to remember, when looking at issues about Bilingualism in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Canada, is that when the battle on the Plains of Abraham was over, Wolfe had bought it in the first act, and Montcalm was soon to follow. The language debate can be traced back to the two adjutants (adjutant is the second in command) were left to handle the surrender. They agreed to communicate in their “own language.” Many, seeing this, have assumed that they would be sitting there with translators, trying to hammer out a deal. In actual fact, both men were Scottish, well, essentially. The British were now commanded by James Murray, Scottish to his core. The French were commanded by a child of exile, if you will, Jean-Baptiste-Nicolas-Roch de Ramezay, whose ancestors it seems were Catholic Jacobites. This being said, it is just as likely that between the two of them they spoke either Scots, a dialect of English so different that is is almost considered its own language, or, though somewhat less likely, Erse-Gaelic. Either way, the Language debate is a joke. Let the French speakers speak French, the English speakers speak English, and be done with it. If an individual is bilingual, good for them, if not, too bad. Just be thankful you have the opportunity to learn your native tongue, and actually use it. And remember whose good graces, a Scotsman wearing a red coat and powdered wig, gave you that right.

To Jeffsimard Dude, I speak French very well.  In fact, I speak 3 languages. Someone at Air Canada is in trouble to some degree because of this idiot Thibodeau.  Every English person has potential to be a target of Thibodeau and hard-liners like him.  That's why I'm expressing my concern to Canada and especially Ontario.  We can and should push back.  Sorry to the innocent nice Francophones.  But how many Anglophones were forced to leave Quebec when Quebec's Nazi-like language police set out to extinguish the English language.  More than 1 million dude.  More than 1 million nice English Canadians had to leave Quebec or face daily bigotry and daily 2nd class feelings...  And we're the majority in Canada.   Ouuuh.  I bet Anglophones being told you can't have English signs we're feeling pretty good.  Huh!  dude?  Huh Mr. Jeff Simard?  Where were the nice French Quebecer's then?  Supporting the law to outlaw English.  Hmm....  Where were you Jeff Simard?  Seems you're defending Thibodeau.  Uhm.... Warning.

Let's all be fair. All English speakers should be awarded $12,000 each for not being served in English. The law states that customers be served in both English and French. So how many time were anglophones been refused service because it is a French city in Quebec.

Haha tread lightly... you may want to translate your messages into french... and make sure its the proper version at that. Some tend to be rather technical!
