Michelle Obama Visits First Lady of Russia, Sign of Women Power?
In a country where black or female politicians are few, hosting the Obama family may raise eyebrows, though discreetly behind doors. Sexism and racism have been prevalent in Russia though Putin has spoken against anti-Semitism and xenophobia. Like he said, "Displays of chauvinism, xenophobia and aggressive nationalism now confront virtually all countries.."
Russia gave women the right to vote in 1918, before most democratic countries did. USA, in 1920. In politics, many women who are Duma Deputies were "beautiful Divas", having posed naked in the past, and have now become powerful women. The number of women in the Duma have doubled since. Things seem to be changing, progress takes time.
...The American first lady (Michelle Obama), who has wowed publics in the U.S. and Europe with her easy elegance and charm, will perhaps face a bigger challenge in winning over a Russian public that has scant respect for women who grab the limelight from their powerful husbands.
...Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's wife Svetlana is pious and discreet and met her husband while she was a schoolgirl. She supports charity and the arts, but has assumed no independent voice on issues facing the country. She dresses conservatively, lacking the edgy fashion sense that has attracted a nationwide following for Michelle Obama.
Russia has known one iconic first lady in modern times: Raisa Gorbachev, wife of the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who was much loved around the world for breaking with tradition by appearing regularly in public with her husband, embracing high fashion and firing off wisecracks during official foreign trips.
But she earned little affection for her boldness in Russia, where she was seen as strong-willed and ambitious.
As for Vladimir Putin's wife, Lyudmilla, she only occasionally appeared in the company of her husband — fueling widespread reports the two were estranged.
Boris Yeltsin's wife Naina assumed a lower profile behind her husband, achieving popularity by declaring indifference to politics and saying she would sooner see Yeltsin retire.
The visit to Russia by Barack Obama, the first black man to be elected president of the United States, is significant for many Russians.
But for Russians of African descent, in particular, the new U.S. leader is a potent symbol of triumph over the same challenges they themselves face in a country where dark-skinned people remain rare and often unwelcome.
In 2007, Putin addressed xenophobia and anti-Semitics in his address to European Jewish Congress.
Displays of chauvinism, xenophobia and aggressive nationalism now confront virtually all countries, including states with deep historical democratic traditions. Unfortunately there have been isolated incidents of anti-Semitism and extremist groups in Russia. Some marginal political forces are trying to exploit nationalist slogans. We understand perfectly the threat that the propaganda of nationalism and chauvinism represents for our multi-ethnic and multi-confessional society. And therefore the fight against any manifestations of xenophobia and the prevention of conflicts based on ethnicity are particularly important to us. Russian law enforcement agencies conduct a thorough investigation of all incidents caused by nationalism and racism.
Maybe it is just as well that Clinton is nursing an injured elbow at home.

For many Russians even Modern Muscovites a black face in a crowd on any city street, either in St, Petes or Downtown Moscow always elicit stares from the populace.

Hopefully Obama's visit will have some effect on that. Unfortunately there are hundreds of racist groups, come 5000 members I read. I think Putin is trying to stop this.
But then, the KKK is still around.

When visiting a foreign country, as their guest one should observe and be respectful to their protocol. In a country, such as Russia, where private lives of the politicians are not publisized, it is NOT APPROPRIATE to BRING CHILDREN. In particular, this is not a family vacation for Obamas, it's a state visit. Michelle Obama is simply wasting taxpayers money and not representing the US respectfully by taking her kids to state trips as if it's a vacation and by dressing too casual with cheap cardigans but very expensive belts and shoes designed by NON-US designers.

Women in the US voted in the individual states, especially in the Western US, beginning in the 1860s and 1870s.
Not having the right to vote in the federal elections was actually not as important as being able to vote for the mayor and city councils and the governors who appointed senators to the US senate back then.
So, the situation is not all comparable to the Russian situation.
In any case, after 1917, yes, women could vote in Russia for the state apparatchik of the Russian communist party's choosing, as if that represented freedom?
There were also free to starve to death in the streets or go to Siberia or see their families deported.

Russia would be a god friend to have. They will play an important part in the future of the world.
Maybe Michelle Obama can play a part in a developing friendship.
