Miep Gies Who Preserved Anne Frank's Diary Dies At 100
Miep Gies, a Dutch woman who helped Anne Frank and her family to hide from the Nazis, has died at the age of 100. Miep Gies was the one credited for finding and preserving Anne Frank's diary after her family was arrested and deported. Gies and other helpers supplied food and necessities to Anne Frank's family hiding in a secret annex inside an office building. Gies found Anne Frank's diary after the family's hiding place was discovered by Nazi authorities and kept it until girl's return. When it was discovered that Anne Frank died, the diary was handed over to the girl's surviving father Otto Frank.
"They were powerless, they didn't know where to turn..." she says. "We did our duty as human beings: helping people in need."
Miep risked being sent to a labour camp or even getting shot for hiding the Jewish family. During her lifetime, Gies was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for helping the Franks.
Anne Frank's family came from Germany in 1930s to hide from the Nazi regime in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Anne Frank died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Frank wrote her diary from June 1942 to August 1944. Her diary was translated into many languages and serves as a powerful reminder of the atrocities of the Nazi regime.

We read and studied the story of "Anne Frank" when I was a student in elementary school. Her writings, I still remember well. Her story is not to be taken lightly and should *never* be forgotten.
I just hope that Anne's story is a part of the curriculum for all growing students in the US and everywhere possible.
It makes me wonder what is being taught now in the US and schools around the world.

Forgive me, I forgot to say that Miep Gies is a saint, nothing less.
May she rest in peace.

Despite what she said during her lifetime, Miep Gies was indeed a hero.
