RAND corporation, an American think-tank analysed 650 cases between 1968 and 2006.
The question was, how a group was brought to an end, by military force, or smart
tactics? Columbia was build up on military force, the success to question. In total
20 % of the cases ended by military forces. A change of the method of smaller goups
ended 42% of the cases, 40% were dismantled by police or intelligence work. There
is no battlefield solution, fundamental rethinking is necessary. Still the best
solution, not in this report, is to create a basic local economy, that offers more
opportunities than secret activities. Up to now nobody in the military found a
method to order economy.

Is military force the best means to defeat terrorist groups?
AFP

MANY studies have asked how terrorist groups are born; relatively few have described how such groups are best put out of business. A recent effort to do the latter, by RAND Corporation, an American think-tank, is therefore welcome. It considers the fate of some 650 groups (defined widely), between 1968 and 2006, asking in particular what put an end to them. In the process it casts some useful light on a hoary old question of counterterrorism: whether military force or smart policing is the more effective method for tackling terrorists and insurgents

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff.

When the RAND corp is acknowledging military might is not always the most effective way to defeat enemies, it seems like another sign the wind is changing. Only 20% of violent opposition groups were defeated with military might, and it worked best when there was an organized army. However, most terrorist groups are smaller and more diffuse; 43% of the time they decided to work through the political process; 40% were broken up thru investigative and police work. All people should feel like their voice can be heard and their opinions count. No one should resort to violence, we should all strive for dialogue and understanding.

So, what to do about those war and fear mongers in the Democrat and Republican parties? How can they be brought to the table? How can they be convinced to listen to the will of the People, when they control the media and the political process and don't "have" to ?

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff.

This has been at the top of my agenda, since recognizing that our American story and influence in the world stems from the fact we got there by the means to using violence. Whether Violence is used as a tool for justice, terrorist groups feel they are getting justice applied when they take up the cause for the violent route.

In fact the American story and its political garbage likes to put up the image that there is a fundamental war going on in proving that violence is right. They won't win that debate or philsophical conflict. Clearly the need for Institutions that represent the corp/core of Nonviolence is essential.

The trouble in getting this organized and recognized as a valid Institution is the gun lobby, who would work tiredlessly in defeating anything that would erode their influence in using guns, selling guns, and parading the need for them because of Crime and Violence.

Nonetheless if truely we are on the same team in seeking an end to violence, why can we not favor that part of the equation that uses Nonviolence as its weapon of choice? If we are not threatening people, there is more of a degree of trust in working for common interests and supporting greater society economically and socially.

This is why I have started The International Institute of Nonviolence. And its not just a United States problem. It's virtually global in nature. I am an American having begun efforts to setup this badly needed  Institute that solves issues through works of Nonviolence. But it takes more than me. It takes media support, it takes private sector support, and even UN support to have an effective Institute. The UN is not an Institute of Nonviolence. They will use force if needed. But it does not mean that they don't see the real need to have such a Nonviolent Institute in the drawer so to speak to use to diffuse and help guide thinking more toward Nonviolent Acts; than the bunk of "All options are on the table" rhetoric.

I have begun trying to setup a Regional Office in Pakistan in VoiceforPeaces, Bajaur Agency in Pakistan. But we need funding and support. Also I have begun trying to get one setup in Nigeria as well, to help the people overcome the violence due to the Oil Industry's total disregard to the environment there, and ruining the good peoples lives in Nigeria. I see and understand their troubles.

I would ask people to check out my article in Opening The International Institute of Nonviolence here. http://www.nowpublic.com/world/international-institute-nonviolence

and to join our efforts in changing the mood and political bad feelings that surrounds war and terror. We need to break those fearful disgrungled attitudes, and bring hope and trust, and assurance to the immediate world stage for all of us. In order to break the war decalaration we need to know Nonviolence is really the best Option for recovery of human kind.

I hope people will take a look at this website as well. It is from Nigeria and it is full of good articles about the troubles in Nigeria. I know I asked Paschen about this and I hope he will take another look at it, to see that there are valid issues the Nigerian people have. He is familar with Nigeria. I hope we can start a dialog about this.

Thanks Solarlife for your article. Now if we can get The RAND Corporation to put their money in a more effective tool and weapons system which is Nonviolence I think we can begin to get things back on track for not only the USA but the entire world. Hope they will help me establish The International Institute of Nonviolence. Thank You Solarlife and members at RAND Corp.

Thanks,

Rev. Jermano

Absorption is the cheapest and best way to disarm the more successful groups that have a coherent voice and somewhat clear demands.  They fight the state: make them part of the state.

The groups that are disorganized and anarchistic can be maginalized to extinction by lack of success compared to the society they attack, which takes time, perhaps a generation or more, since they require new, young members all the time and those are not blind and would eventually not choose to join a pack of losers.
