Will Soldiers Be Paid If There is Government Shutdown 2011? Robert Gates Addressed the Issue of Military Pay and the Government Shutdown
No doubt plenty members of the US military are watching the situation in Washington closely as the government appears close to shutting down.
The question that has to be on the minds of every soldier is: Will I get paid if there is a government shutdown in 2011?
During what may be his last trip to Iraq, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates addressed the issue of military pay if there is a 2011 government shutdown.
According to Gates, soldiers in the field will receive half of their pay for this pay period if there is a government shutdown. The remaining pay will be paid out at a later date as backpay.
But in all seriousness, based on some stuff I read this morning, if the government shuts down starts on the 8th and goes for a week, you’d get a half a check. If it goes from the 15th to the 30th, you wouldn’t get a pay check on the 30th but you would be back paid for all of it.”
Gates later told reporters that if the government shutdown goes through the 30th then they’d miss a paycheck.

Anyone considering the impact on the banking system? All these military troops that are not getting paid and have families / mortgages to contend with....what happens to them? Do our credit reports get wrecked and potential to lose our homes over this get considered??

My husband is a U.S Soldier. He risks his life everyday. This is how he gets treated. I don't know how we are going to pay our bills, rent, or even put food on our table and survive with no paycheck. The military as it is doesn't pay enough. Most military families are living paycheck to paycheck already.

We got paid half our paychecks today, I'm set to deploy in a month and I was supposed to be taking my pre-deployment leave to see my family in less than ten days, due to the loss of the money I RELY on, I will not be able to afford doing this. See you in a year family.

Yea really deal with it...I dealt with it when I was Med Evac out of Iraq doing my underpaid job protecting you ungrateful a$$ so that you can have the freedom to type Deal with it...ON THE INTERNET!!!...I bet...matter a fact I KNOW you wouldn't have the guts to say that to my face or any other service member that has served or is serving right now!!!...

Please tell me how YOU would deal with it? What would you do? Military cannot moonlight unless given permission and it was announced yesterday, before the final word about remaining open, that if Federal employees got a second job while the government was shut down, they would be fired.
I'm interested in how you would "deal with it".

To Mr. deal with it. You are an ignorant fool. I can tell you are not a member of the armed forces or you would empathize with the fellow who won't get to visit family or pay bills. You should go stand infront of a bullet for your country and not get paid. See how that makes you feel. I worry for our service members. They already have enough stress but now to not get paid what they are intitled. Telling us don't worry will get back paid. Well does our back pay include late fees or raise intrest rates for the bills that are going to be late. We just used most of our savings to moved 47 miles to the next base because they couldn't afford to ship us to WA. This weakens my faith in the military. Rude comments don't help those who will suffer.

This is insane. We are getting ready to PCS in the next couple weeks and we have yet to sell our current home. Come May 1st we will have to house payments. We also have 2 young children. Both in diapers and one requiring formula. Not getting paid is really going to be a detriment to our life. My husband and I can live off minimal as far as food in concerned but my children can't. I am so terrified about what is going to happen. I can't believe the government is doing this to us and all the other thousands of people who will be affected. I don't agree with abortion but I also don't think it should set priority over peoples livelihood.

I think it is a sad, sad thing when we as tax paying citizens have to sit by and watch the overpaid beaucrats make life altering decisions that personally affect our military families. These are families that make sacrafices and put their lives on the line on a daily basis only to be advised that they may be doing this for no pay.

Is this part of a pre-planned conspiracy to make ourselves vulnerable to a foreign government takeover? Do you really think our military will be all out to fight for a country that has turned its back on them while the decision makers don't defend anything but rake in the cash and cause up-risals between political parties? Are we looking for nationwide rioting? these are very good questions to consider when we look directly at what we're really facing. I guess we're next up on the list of government protests. Keep your eye on the eastern sky.

To Jlbrown: Yes, I DO believe our soldiers will continue to do their jobs at half-pay, because that's what they do. And remember people, it's not just soldiers getting the shaft here. Government workers will get NO paychecks (not even the half-pay that soldiers will get). Think about what that includes - Human Services workers who are watching out for the safety of the nation's children, for example. Some government employees may be overpaid do-nothings, but a great deal of them are of great importance to this country and it's citizens. And FYI: The Senate passed a bill proposed by Barbara Boxer of California that would suspend Congressional paychecks in any government shutdown, but the Republican-controlled House has blocked it.

This really pinches reading the comments of families of the Soldiers. I can very well imagine the life of a woman who is only dependent on husband's check and living alone for months. Apart from this all, it will harm and will have a negative impact on the "War on Terror."

Now first of all im not impressed with this at all. i heard of it, and i was like oh crap... im a E-1 and Graduated AIT april 7th. i have bills to pay. alot of them. out of a already bad paycheck of not even $1,000 a month, im barely getting by. i have bills, and a 1 yr old son back home that i need to take care of! im also in the process of building credit so when im out of the Army i can have decent credit so i can have a decent life for me and my family! Therefore when im in debt with a credit card, and my new cell phone contract, there goes my credit score at a early stage of building it. i Just looked at mypay. My LES is only telling me im getting $266.46 this pay period. HOW am i supposed to pay my bills, while paying for my son back home? tell me that. i joined the military for a better life. and for money. im not going to lie, thats what i needed at the time! well, im in the military and im still piss broke. i dont understand. things NEED to change....
