Mine clearing work is currently being done manually in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan officials say they have imported new equipment from Slovakia to speed up mine clearing work in the war-affected northern zone.

An official said the five (Bosena type) machines will help them to de-mine an area of up to five-thousand square metres a day.

At the moment, mine clearing work is being done manually and only ten square metres are cleared daily by a single de-mining worker.

The government says it needs to de-mine the former war zone before it can allow nearly 300,000 of displaced Tamil civilians to go back to their homes.

The Sri Lankan army and eight other organisations have been involved in clearing landmines in the north.

The military declared victory over Tamil Tiger rebels in May.

De-mining in the North is being expedited under the mediation of the Uthuru Wasanthaya Task Force. The Slovakian Government has expressed support to the programme at the request of Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa.

These machines are much faster and thorough than whatis done during hand demining. The aim of the exercise to complete the demining projects as early as possible.

The areas mined by the LTTE terrorists add up to many square kilometers in total.

Let us hope that the operations could be completed quickly so that people can walk in the ex LTTE held areas without fear and the resettlement process is expedited.,

Only 10 square meters can be demined manually, daily, whereas these machines can demine 5000 square meters.

Srilanka locked the ENTIRE VANNI TAMILS in CONCENTRATION CAMPS to Colonise the VANNI 100% TAMIL AREAS with 100% SINHALESE- as they did in several parts in the East since 1948- with the foreign aid given to help the TAMILS and so called MINES.Srilanka already settled Several 1000 SINHALESE in the TAMIL AREAS already, One wonder who made the MINES which don't kill Sinhalese?
