Police who have been searching for a nurse who went missing over a week ago have found her alive.

Magdeline Makola, from Livingston was last seen at the end of her shift in an Edinburgh hospital.

Police said she was discovered in her own car in Airdrie, about 20 miles from her home, at noon on 26 December.

She had been missing since 15 December.

South African-born Makola, who is a nurse specialising in heart medicine is in hospital being treated for minor injuries.

She has been living in Scotland for 6 years.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "At the moment this inquiry is at its very early stages and we need to establish the exact circumstances of how Magdeline came to be within the boot of the vehicle."

"In particular we want to hear from anyone who has seen the red-coloured Vauxhall Astra, registration Y295 SRS, being driven in the central belt since Magdeline was last seen on December 15."

No one has been arrested or questioned and officers believe the vehicle has been driven in the Chapelhall area of Airdrie and in Glasgow city centre since she went missing.

A nurse who had not been seen for more than ten days was found alive yesterday in the boot of her car.

Magdeline Makola, who is originally from South Africa but lives in Livingston, was found in North Lanarkshire by officers from Lothian and Borders Police who were investigating her disappearance.

Her car was found in Airdrie, where it had been spotted being driven after her disappearance.

The 38-year-old had last been seen on the morning of 15 December, when she finished a shift at the cardiology ward of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Friends of the nurse, who works in heart medicine, first raised the alarm after she failed to turn up for work.

They said her disappearance was out of character and expressed concerns for her safety.

Police began making inquiries and searched her home, where they found her work bag ready with her uniform and a packed lunch.

Her passport and bank cards were also in her house, but her car was gone.
