Deputy Robert Paris Killed in Standoff with James Ferrario in Modesto, California

When Stanislaus County Sheriff's Dept. tried to serve an eviction notice to James Ferrario in Modesto, California, the situation turned into a shootout and standoff that lasted over 12 hours. Deputy Robert Paris was shot dead, as was a civilian.

Over 100 law-enforcement officers surrounded the apartment building, where James Ferrario had allegedly stockpiled weapons and survival gear. As a SWAT team stormed the building, Ferrario apparently lit the apartment on fire, and presumably died in the blaze.

Meanwhile, the media was getting trolled. A 4chan user claiming to be James Ferrario (NSFW link; it's /b) posted a series of items to /b, before revealing himself as a troll. MSM outlets such as Fox 40 News didn't pay close enough attention to the thread, which was suspicious from the get-go, and carried on covering the "shooter posting on 4chan" angle.

Eventually the troll had to spell it out: "OP here. I have some news for you.

"I am a god-tier troll. I'm the last remaining god-tier troll on /b/. I am trolling you all today, in such epic proportions, because I have a message for you. I'm the last of a dying breed and it's lonely here when I'm the only one creating epic breads. I do enjoy entertaining, but sometimes I want to be entertained."

Back in the real world, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Dept was waiting for clearance to enter James Ferrario's burnt-out apartment and find his remains.
