Montreal Head Nurse Shot in the Chest by Resident
33-year-old Marlena Cardoso, head nurse of a nursing home was shot in the chest yesterday by an 84 year old resident in a wheelchair, apparently after being told he was going to be transferred to the hospital. Well-loved, she is described as an angel who treats residents like they are family. In stable condition, she was expected to have more surgery. Police say that it is legal for residents to possess a gun if it is registered.
An incident in a nursing home also occurred in Gibsons, BC earlier this year, where a policeman was forced to shoot a resident, after she shot the nursing manager because she was being evicted.
This is becoming more dangerous than working in inner city Emergency.
An 84-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after an employee was shot at Les Jardins de L'Aubade residence in Montreal's Saint-Léonard district.
The man was expected to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon for attempted murder and weapons charges.
The victim, 33-year-old Marlena Cardoso, who is a nurse at the residence, remained in stable condition on Wednesday.
....Iannicello said Cardoso was slated to undergo more surgery Wednesday afternoon.
...Iannicello said the senior was apparently late on some payments, so Cardoso told him he had to have a meeting with the home's manager. Iannicello said it was then that the man allegedly went back to his apartment and came out in his wheelchair holding a gun.
...Police said the shooter was in a wheelchair when Cardoso was shot in the upper torso on Tuesday afternoon.
...Police confirmed that as long as the gun was properly registered, the man was within his rights to own a firearm because a seniors home is considered a private residence.
The Gibsons, BC incident...
Cops arrived on the scene shot the women, shot the deranged woman in the wheelchair after she would not drop her weapon after shooting a Staff member.

Why would a gun be legal in a nursing home?
at 17:52 on July 15th, 2009
Because it is not considered a hospital, but someone's "home", like an apartment. Mind you I think a lot of these people are somewhat senile, and almost all are on under the influence of numerous pharmaceuticals.

Yes, I'm not sure just allowing them to keep guns because they can is a good enough reason in my opinion.

I second albertacowpoke's question...

I hope the Nurse gets better. I am wondering about the weapons in a nursing home.. not to make light of the situation but many elderly would get better care in the US if they had fire arms. We have a high level of elderly abuse in America..
In all seriousness Hospital services provide security and I wonder if it is appropriate for patients to have weapons.

I hate guns why is there not a yearly compulsory mental state check on people who are licensed to have a gun? Perhaps a compulsory yearly renewal of gun licenses would be a good idea.
