More than 20 killed in ghastly train accident in Northern India
LUCKNOW —More than 20 persons were killed and over one hundred injured in a ghastly train accident in the Uttara Pradesh state of India on Sunday. According to information, moe than 100 injured passengers were rescued by railwaymen and police when the Kalka Mail derailed while on its way to Kolkata. Authorities said that engine and 12 coaches of the mail have jumped the tracks near Fatehpur town of Uttara Pradesh. Senior railway official A.K. Jain said causes for the derailment were not immediately known. He said it appeared that the driver applied the emergency breaks. The toll was likely to rise as rescuers made their way through the coaches and used gas cutters to cut through the mangled metal. TV stations showed local residents helping injured passengers away from the train and breaking the windows of coaches to help those trapped inside. The derailment delayed several other trains, officials said. .
