More Canadian women drawn to guns: Canadian Crime and Justice

Opinion

Barry Artiste.

Certainly not surprising when women always seem to be the favoured target by criminals, women who fear for their safety even in their own home.

A trend I am afraid and of the opinion once again due to a justice system unable or unwilling to put repeat criminals behind bars, which may result in a Wild West Style of Vigilantism by Women who do not wish to be victims any longer.

The Conservative Government as a minority promised on their party platform to toughen laws was stonewalled by a majority Liberal dominated senate which would force judges to mete out serious time for serious crime.

Though Canada has some pretty stringent laws already on the books, many judges interpretation of our existing laws are clouded by their obvious lack of willingness to jail repeat offenders, resulting in many Canadians to feel Justice for victims has been sold out to Criminals.

One wonders how the Justice system and the laws meant to protect us, will be interpreted by Judges when a woman takes out a violent offender who accosts her or her family?

Granted Police are there to protect us, but there are more criminals than police, and an unlimited supply of victims.

Criminals do not work 8 to 4, and do not play by anyones rules or boundaries. Let the Vigilantism Begin, and God help the criminal who stands in her way.

Lady Justice has now balanced the scales of justice in her favour, lets see if the Justice system,, lawyers, Judges, courts and a Canadians tired of being victims agree when the first murder trial hits the media. It does not look pretty for any of us.

More women drawn to guns

By RENATO GANDIA, SUN MEDIA

The Edmonton Sun

More city women appear to be taking an interest in guns. But the jury's out on what's behind the trend. City gun store owner Dianne Harnois said she's seen a 30% spike in the number of women coming into her shop over the past two years.

And she's got a theory why. "There's a lot of women out there who love to hunt," said Harnois, owner of P& D Enterprises.

She said women come to the store with their boyfriends or husbands who are firearm enthusiasts. Later, they also become interested in purchasing a weapon so they can go hunting or practise shooting with their partner.

A similar trend has been observed in Calgary, with some speculating it's in response to violent crime in that city. Edmonton criminologist Bill Pitt said he's not surprised that some Alberta women may be learning to shoot to protect themselves.

"There's been so many violent crimes that have not been reported and unfortunately women are most of the time the victims of this type of crime," said Pitt.

He speculated that at least 90% of sexual assaults in Canada against women go unreported.

An increasing number of women are becoming conscious of their vulnerability and refusing to be victimized, he said.

It seems that there are a number of people in this great nation of ours (Canada) who are hopelessly lost in the bliss of the past. I would like to be there too but I must live in the real world.

These folks (often charged with making critical decisions for the masses) are frequently inclined to see things in Canada as they once were rather than to see things as they presently are. This blatent ignorance would be fine if the remainder of us did not have to live in the same nation as such people.

Canada has been the so-called kinder, gentler nation in the past for good reason, very little of which has anything to do with us as Canadians.

For example, if one were to reduce the geographic size of Canada by two thirds then increase the population of Canada by more than ten times and then provide for a much more temperate climate (whereby the citicenry were outside for a larger proportion of time throughout the year) then we too would be much like the good people of the United States in many ways including the way in which we see firearms issues.

Simply put, where there are more people concentrated in a smaller land mass there is more potnetial for conflict especially where the social contract is not respected by a minority of criminals.

Self defence will always be an inalienable God-given right for all people of all nations. Nothing the lawmakers or courts will do in Canada will ever change this concept in any way, shape or form.

Only in a nation where politicians and lawmakers are foolish enough to bury their heads in the sand when it comes to rights of people to defend themselves against violent criminals will the citizens have to fear.

Why is it that law abiding people in Canada who wish to purchasing firearms for self defense have to go through this ridiculous charade of carefully chosen semantics in order to do so? Just another example of how we in Canada are forced by the elite to play this foolish political game for the purpose of perception merely so that the world continues to see Canada as something it no longer is. People must have the courage to examine where we currently fuind ourselves.

Canada is not merely in decline but is in a freefall situation. Soon enough we (as Canadians) could find ourselves as a nation in such a serious situation that mediocrity could become a concept we will aspire to.

Personally I would much prefer to live in a world with no firearms or weapons of any sort FOR ANYBODY, ANYWHERE but we do not even live in the shadow of possibility of such a utopian existence.

In Canada we no longer have the luxury of pretending to be what we are no longer.

As long as there are street criminals who are armed the very least the government of this country can do to protect the people is to allow the "stable" citizens (who wish to) to arm themselves for the purpose of self defense. Enough of this masquerade.

This is especially significant in light of each successive Canadian government's perpetual inability or unwillingness to satisfy the personnel requirements of the law enforcement community in order that the citizens be adequately protected by the police. What do the feds actually do with all our money anyway?

Sadly enough I suspect that future Canadian governments will continue to deal with violent crime in the same old manner. That is to continue to target and prohibit a new "potential weapon" (simply for political effect) each year untill in the very end Canadians will be required to possess a license to carry a pen.

Only in Canada would people be at risk because the Nostalgia-gentsia refuse to see Canada for what it has become.

Only in Canada can one buy Red Rose tea.

Only in Canada does does it seem that self defense continues to be an alien concept.

On both counts I can only say, "What a pity."

Thanks for the comments  Justly concerned. I see two things, severe penalties for criminals, and even more severe for guns and crime, like life in prison.  Arming citizens and Criminals makes an arms race, Currently though with lax time for crimes, I wholeheartedly believe citizens need to arm themselves to protect themselves, but only if they take mandatory self defence courses and a full background check on their mental stability and the mental stability of those who live in the same household must be done.

Then and only then would I agree to arming citizens. Though it will be on someones conscious if a misplaced firearm falls into the hands of a child or someone untrained in it's use. Especially if gun locks are not used and ammo is not stored separate.  No easy answers for sure, but when it comes to us and them, well us it is, and armed for bear.
