NP Rank:
More Indians choosing to abort unwanted girls
Only 300 girls to 1000 boys survive to birth from high-caste wealthy Punjabi backgrounds. In this day and age it's incredible to believe that this is going on. The 'worth' of daughters in some cultures seems less now than ever before. Something must be done by the Indian government if it is truly to be seen leading a developing country into its next stage - financial capability and potential for economic independence are not enough.
A shocking report, compiled by Action Aid and a Canadian charity will be presented to MPs belonging to the all-party group on population, development and reproductive health.
Girls must bring large dowries to marriage, and because they have fewer property rights, Indian families sometimes see them as prohibitively expensive.
In the wealthy state of Punjab, only 300 girls survive for every 1,000 boys among high-caste families. Rich parents are increasingly - and illegally - using ultrasound technology to decide whether to continue with a pregnancy

LotusFlower, I like this story. It's good stuff.
chandigarh is the capital of Punjab is the city with worst sex ratio.
CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh is turning out to be a city of paradox. On one hand, the city has one of the highest literacy rates (81.75 per cent) in the country and on the other, it is almost at the bottom of the table as far as male-female sex ratio is concerned, says the Census report for 2001.

LotusFlower, I like this story. It's good stuff. I can't believe it's 300:1000. That's 30%! What's going to happen to all the boys who grow up and find that they cannot find wives? Surely that is not good for society. China is having a similar problem at the moment and facing the consequences, mainly prostitution and street brawls.
