More laid-off men means more female breadwinners

The original title of this piece was 'More laid-off men means more Mommy Breadwinners', which is easily one of the most patronising titles I've read in a while. Clearly the women cited in this piece are identified by their procreation and not their gender. *rolls eyes*

Anyway, I'm interested in what this piece says about America changing and I wonder if it's true. Will the structure of America change permanently in terms of the numbers of men and women working or is this just a temporary change because of the economic downturn? I suppose we'll see.

The numbers are startling: More than 80 percent of pink slips handed out since the recession began in December 2007 have gone to men, thanks to their disproportionate slice of jobs in hard-hit fields like construction and manufacturing, according to government data. In November, women held more than 49 percent of jobs. And since many are with more stable employers such as schools and hospitals, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics suggest women soon could outnumber men in the workplace for the first time in the nation's history. "The whole structure of the American job is changing," said Jill Ater, co-founder of the national part-time job-placement service 10 til 2. "This trend could change the way we look at traditional gender roles. Women represent a super-educated but under-utilized workforce. Now many of these women are saying, "He might not be able to get a job. But I can.' ''

I laughed at one man quoted here:

"I'm beginning to feel like Mr. Mom," said Mark Mistor, 46, laid off last month as purchasing manager for a Hayward tech firm. "I pick up my daughter from kindergarten at noon. But if I'm out interviewing or have résumés to submit, I'll drop her off at day care — a 6-year-old needs a lot of attention."

Well poor you! Perhaps this new trend will have an unexpected benefit of showing men just how difficult a job it is to be a stay-at-home parent. And that would be no bad thing.

Update. Similar (although more interesting) piece from the NYT.

With the recession on the brink of becoming the longest in the postwar era, a milestone may be at hand: Women are poised to surpass men on the nation’s payrolls, taking the majority for the first time in American history.

"...And that would be no bad thing."

Let us hope so. But maybe this situation bring up a completely new set of problems and situations which none of us would have thought of.

However change is always good. Let us wait and watch. :-)

Nice article though...!

Thank you. And thank you for recommendation. :)

And while I see what you mean, I don't really envisage any massive societal repercussions from some men learning about issues and problems that they previously knew little about. The 'no bad thing' was in reference to men learning more about being a stay-at-home parent. There is seldom a negative side-effect from broadening one's worldview.

You are welcome..!

As for men learning more things, we did, right? The macho-beard-walking muscle mountains always talk in deep baritone voice  no more represent the ideal or "real" man anymore.Metrosexual is the social norm now. It is no more uncool for men to cry. Especially for the last letter generations (x y and z). So I don't think men in gerenal are averse to the idea of being Mr.Mom..! Honestly I feel that these changes are definitely for good of the mankind.

Thank you very much  for forcing me to think in those lines..!

Agent, absolutely. We're all learning all the time, and I'm grateful for that indeed. And mankind is certainly benefiting as a result.

Thanks again for the recommendation. :)

The more I read today the more I believe the American dream is becoming a nightmare.

How do you mean, Jazzy?

Ah yes. The ghetto is very full of ill motivated men, and working women. In fact the men are so not motivated that they let women do all the work! And with so many unchaste women around, the ghetto breads the ghetto.

So if the ghetto is encroaching on the burbs, you will know why. Men have lost their motivation to build successful empires.

And if the birth rates plummet, you will know why aswell.. The more women earn, the more likely they are to file for divorce. Women who earn 100k or more per year, 50% are barren and unmarried.

And in nations where men get custody 100% the divorce rates are around 1%. America used to have safe streets. We used to have a divorce rate of 3%, with fault divorce, men had custody 100% of the time, and the nation debt was only a few billion. We had 100,000 men in prison. Now we have 6 million to 8 million.

Did you know that 85% of criminals, hookers, strippers, drug dealers, come from single mother households? 9 out of 10 serial killers come from single mother homes, with domineering unchaste single mothers?

So in conclusion, feminists have done a really lousy job and reinvention of the wheel. It looks like nations will weak men, and domineering women, really end up just weak, and in disorder!

Perhaps you ladies can also figure out of a way to defeat the next hitler that invades us!

You go grrl!

Us weak men, your effeminate side kicks, think you can do it baby!

Isn't that the job of feminism, to create womanly men, and manly women? One must ask these ladies what is the freaking point? Oh and the only thing good that happened by women doubling the workforce, is the rich got richer, and they could hire more. So, all that happened in the end, is women had to work, they had no other choice!
