Moscow MAKS Airshow: Superjets, SU-35, Yak-130, Space Flights
MAKS airshow, in Moscow, took off on Tuesday, Aug 18, 2009, and will propel all week, until August 23.
Vladimir Putin opened the ceremonies after a minute of silence for Colonel Igor Tkachenko, commander of the Russian Knights, who died tragically on Sunday.
Putin went on to say that the development of aircraft building and space exploration is an undoubted priority. He has pledged $80 million dollars for new fighter jets, 48 Su-35S strike fighters from 2010 to 2015; 12 Su-27SM jet fighters from 2009 to 2011; and four twin engine Su-30M2.
I can say that since 2004, the amount of government financing has increased by 20 times. This year, we have allocated another 80 billion roubles for the purpose.
The long-term contracts will give the aircraft builder a chance to focus on new production rather than modernizing existing models used by the Air Force.
Although the Russian Knights will not be performing, other world’s leading aerobatics groups will be, including Russia’s ‘Falcons’ and ‘Swifts’, Italy’s Tricolor Arrows, and France's French Patrol.
Other highlights included the Sukoi Superjet 100, striving to become the world's third leading aircraft after Boeing and Airbus. With a price tag of a mere $30 million dollars, the waiting list keeps getting longer. Also, its full speed ahead for Excalibur Almaz, who plan to blast off private commercial flights by the year 2013, using Russian technology. They are based in the Man of Isle, just off Ireland, and have offices in Moscow and Houston.
“We will be using Russia technology already successfully tested in space. We expect to start flying in 2013 and our capsules are meant to be used again and again.”
Excalibur Almaz is a privat spaceflight company which plans to orbit manned spacecraft, by using modernized TKS space capsules and Almaz space stations, derived from the formerly secret Soviet space program. Missions will support orbital space tourism... Excalibur hopes to begin flights by 2012 or 2013.
Excalibur Almaz is based in Douglas, Isle of Man, with offices in Houston and Moscow.
An international spaceflight company plans to launch paying passengers on weeklong orbital trips by 2013 using vehicles based on Soviet-era spacecraft built for classifed military space stations.
Canada is also an active participant this year, with its Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. In 2003, the Dash 8 became the first western built aircraft certified in Russia.
Bombardier's exhibit will be located in the Ontario Pavilion at the show and the company's participation will be led by its business development and sales team for Russia and the CIS including Vice President, Rod Sheridan and Senior Director, Mark S. Gilbert.
In 2003 Bombardier's Dash 8 aircraft became the first Western-built regional aircraft to obtain Russian certification and registration. Today, 22 CRJ regional jets and 5 Dash 8/Q-Series turboprops are in service with operators in Russia and the CIS.
..."The market for new aircraft is continuing to grow at a fast pace as airlines in Russia and the CIS seek to transform their fleets," said Gary R. Scott, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. "A number of opportunities exist to replace up to170 ageing aircraft in Russia and the CIS. We hope to capture a large segment of this market with our optimized families of aircraft because they are well suited to meet the demands of the region's aviation industry."
In Putin's MAKS speech, he alluded to building up their high-technology sector within the space industry . He did not elaborate.
However, in February, Russia did announce their plans to return to the moon in 2012, with plans for a manned-flight to Mars at a later date.
In co-oporation with India, stage three is expected to fly out by 2012, with stage four being a manned flight to Mars.
Equipment of the Luna Globe project will be based on the Fobos Grunt platform, Yefanov said. The next stage of the project is planned to be a Russo-Indian expedition, which will deliver a lunar reconnaissance vehicle to the site chosen by the Luna Glob. Russia prepares to produce the reconnaissance vehicle, while India will possibly develop the orbiter, he said.
The vehicle will collect more samples of lunar soil, which will be stage three of the project. Stage four implies a manned expedition to the Moon and maintaining there a research station.
As the MAKS international air show enters its second day, more aircraft are being showcased, including the popluar trainer Yak-130.
The Yak-130 is not a mere upgrade of previous Soviet-era models, it’s completely different. This is the only Russian aircraft to be made from scratch since the collapse of the USSR nearly twenty years ago.
...The President of the Irkut corporation, the Yak-130's manufacturer, says the mixture of a trainer and combat jet in one makes the plane highly marketable.
“The global market for this jet is 2,500 planes. The Russian market is estimated at 250-300 jets for our pilot schools. We have already 150 requests. 62 planes are assigned to the Russian Defense Ministry. We've already signed 16 contracts with Algeria,” Demchenko said.

Hi Sara Star,
Thanks for this amazing news.
Yes. Since the days of Igor Sikorski's 1913 successful giant 4-engined Ilya Muromets "flying street car," the Russians have been hard at it in the aviation scene.
Pretty flabbergasting to see the Russian SU-35 demonstrate its' manoeverability. Try doing that with your car. Looks kind of like the US-designed and built Hornet. Nature also tends to replicate what works. Most birds have two wings and one tail, etc.. But wait....The SU-35 features a lot more. There is the canard wing to help it toss end-over-end (a dog-fight-winning trick), vectorable engine nozzles, ventral speed brake. And SO much more. An amazing (lucky?) safe ejection after a spin recovery that ALMOST worked. Looks like it practically sells itself.
And now back to the moon. Maybe to stay a while, this time? What's next? Time to learn Russian.
