Police, including negotiators and bomb-disposal experts, converged on the house. After hours, the device has been removed and the young woman is safe.

As the bomb disposal crew tried to remove the suspected suicide bomb from around  Madeleine Pulver's neck, the exact nature of the device was unknown. (The girl's name was not released for most of the bomb-scare ordeal; SMH identified her as Madeleine Pulver).

The Mosman home is now being searched. One line of police inquiry is that the Mosman bomb scare was part of an extortion threat. Throughout the ten-hour ordeal, the teen girl is reported to have kept her cool.

Police don't believe the woman has had any contact with the person who is believed to have left the device and Mr Murdoch said it was a "tough nut to crack'' whether it was a bomb or not.
