NP Rank:
Mosquito blood gives up crook's DNA
The fossilized mosquito in Jurassic Park that provided DNA from its blood to rebirth dinosaurs offered an intriguing plot line but only the most ardent futurists saw the potential.
Now police in Finland have used the blood of a mosquito found at a crime scene to identify a suspect's DNA. As they continue to build their case, the blood-sucking insect may give them the defining clue that leads to a successful arrest and prosecution.
Finding the car in Seinaejoki, north of Helsinki, police saw that the mosquito had recently sucked blood and decided to send the insect for analysis.
The DNA found from laboratory tests matched a man on the police register.
The suspect denies stealing the car and says he was just hitch-hiking a lift with a man.

Wow. That's an amazing development in forensics. I wonder if it will make a CSI episode? But how do they know that the mosquito didn't bite the suspect somewhere other than the crime scene?
