Mother's Day Celebrations Held In Many Parts of the World Today

The modern Mother's Day is being celebrated in many parts of the world today as sons and daughters plan in celebration of their mothers.

Australia, Canada, India and New Zealand, along with the United States, are just some of the countries celebrating Mother's Day today. Countries such as Ireland, Mexico, South Africa, and the UK do not celebrate today. In Ireland and the UK, Mother's Day takes place on the fourth Sunday in the Christian fasting month of Lent, following the old tradition of Mothering Sunday. In South Africa, Mother's Day is celebrated one week before the U.S. celebration of Mother's Day and in Mexico, Mother's Day is celebrated on a fixed day of May 10th.

History of Mother's Day

First initiated by Philadelphia Schoolteacher Anna M Jarvis, who began a movement in 1907 to make Mother's Day a national holiday in the United States, Mother's Day wasn't proclaimed a national holiday until 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a Proclamation proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the second Sunday of May. The tradition of giving a Mother's Day Presidential Proclamation continues to this day with each President of the United States doing so every year since 1914.

Gift Ideas and Activities for Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a day to honour your mother, not just a day to hand her a box of chocolates and a Hallmark card."

Homemade Mother's Day cards like the MOM Card and A Memory Card make perfect gift ideas. And, since Mother's Day falls right in the middle of Spring, why not celebrate outdoors?

If the weather's nice, take mom to a local park for a relaxed picnic lunch. Bring frisbees, kites, or other fun toys for the kids.

You could also visit a zoo and check out mother animals and their babies, or be active and go on a family bike ride and see who can spot the most wildflowers (be sure to leave them to keep growing so other moms can enjoy them, too).

If you're looking for a more indoor idea, you can take mom out to brunch at her favorite restaurant.

Don't Forget To Include Dad

Cheap is good but free is better according to Consumer Queen.com who wrote up a "Mother's Day Checklist" for dads everywhere who might have a hard time helping kids pick out gifts. Check out suggestions for The Frugal Dad and The Savvy Spender Dad: Mother's Day Ideas Under $50.00.

Don't Forget Moms Come In Many Forms--Celebrate Them

This year, U.S. President Barack Obama issued a Presidential Proclamation--Mother's Day. President Obama acknowledges in his Presidential Proclamation that nurturing families come in many forms, including two-mothers.

Whether adoptive, biological, or foster, mothers share an unbreakable bond with their children, and Americans of all ages and backgrounds owe them an immeasurable debt.  Nurturing families come in many forms, and children may be raised by two parents, a single mother, two mothers, a step-mom, a grandmother, or a guardian.  Mother's Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate these extraordinary caretakers, mentors, and providers who have made us who we are.  As we honor today's mothers, we also reflect upon the memory of those who have passed, and we renew our commitment to living the values they cultivated in us.

So last, but not least, gift ideas for sons and daughters of Lesbian moms who might prefer something outside the 'Traditional Mother's Day' gifts.

I think there ought to be a daughter's or son's day for us putting up with them.Mother's Day is made to look like all mothers are wonderful but many are not. The rotten mothers don't celebrate Mother's Day at all because her family don't want to celebrate it. When I read about Mother's Day, I cannot relate to it at all. Sometimes it is even a 'job' getting something for them on their birthday. I think also it is highly commercialised for me too.

I wonder how many don't celebrate it and why.

You only need to go on the internet to see that many parents really love time off from being with their kids or are stuck at home being depressed with them.

Then there are the mothers I have spoken to who regret having kids, which is 'unmentionable' in the jolly mainstream press.

Of course, there is another unmentionable word 'overpopulation' and mothers having loads of kids, in order to get a son, without any consideration for the environment or lack of jobs for others.

Beaulieu, I'm sorry to learn that you are not a fan of Mother's Day. Nevertheless, I thank you for sharing your thoughts on this day. Best, Rhonda

Thanks Rhonda for this article, it's such a good way to be reminded how our dear mother's had struggled againts life and death for each one of us to survive from being a fetus and becoming a baby. Showing us the beauty of the world, being the very person responsible for our character formation (in my own experience), a comrade, an avid fan and forever the a bestfriend.
